From head-scratching mysteries and hair-raising doom to intriguing characters and subtle hints that may help unravel 14-year-long secrets, “What Lies Beneath” keeps viewers glued, amazed, or frustrated with every episode—especially during the tempestuous clashes between characters, each with their own story to tell.
#1: Edong’s phone call with Erica
In the early episodes, much of Edong’s (Jake Cuenca) life before Bagumbayan Prison is revealed, including the roles that Beth (Charlie Dizon), Mel (Sue Ramirez), Alice (Janella Salvador), and Erica (Kaila Estrada) played in his unjust incarceration 14 years ago.
After seeing Beth, Mel, and Alice’s home renovation featured on television, Edong takes offense at how they have already built successful lives despite the injustice they caused him.
Late at night, after all the inmates have gone to sleep, Edong decides to call Erica about the matter. Over the years, she has grown into a strong-willed lawyer, determined to help him clear his name, carrying the guilt of having been part of his false accusation.
#2: Celestino’s fear-laden interrogation and Lucas’ breaking point
Unyielding in her quest to prove young Edong’s innocence (Renshi de Guzman), Erica (Krystal Mejes) reveals to the intimidating Celestino (Bart Guingona) that Louisa’s (Mutya Orquia) killer had a tattoo on his back—a mark Edong does not have.
Irked, Celestino dismisses her claim and instead concludes that she likely fabricated the detail to help the Santiago brothers since Lucas (Andrez del Rosario), Edong’s younger brother, is also Erica’s lover at the time.
Erica’s repeated attempts to be heard continue to be thwarted, particularly when she points out the false watch—which Beth (Allyson McBride), Mel (Reich Alim), and Alice (Eliza Borromeo) all insist it belonged to Louisa, despite the mismatched details. In the end, Erica is powerless to secure Edong’s release.
Following the emotionally draining police interrogations in Amurao, Lucas confronts Erica, overwhelmed with feelings of betrayal, and ultimately decides to leave her for good.
#3: Erica drops by Lucas’ new business in Amurao
Uninvited, Erica (Kaila Estrada) still attends the opening of Fitness Plus in Amurao, Lucas’ new business branch. As she enters, she silently observes Lucas (JM de Guzman) speaking softly and proudly about his brother to Amurao’s mayor, highlighting how Edong (Jake Cuenca) has changed for the better during his time in Bagumbayan Prison.
Moments later, Erica joins the conversation, expressing doubt about Edong’s good record—especially after the recent phone call.
Lucas holds back his temper until the right moment, then firmly puts Erica in her place, reminding her that they don’t need her back in their lives to disrupt it again, and that she is 14 years too late to make things right.
#4: Mel calls out Anton’s manipulation
In one of their arguments that’s too painful to endure watching, Anton’s (Jameson Blake) gaslighting of Mel (Sue Ramirez) proves relentless. It stretches across the very issues Anton himself has created: accusing her of taking illegal substances (when she was actually desperately trying to escape his abuse) and alleging infidelity with a co-worker. He then tells Mel that she can leave him, but only at the cost of her career and dreams.
#5: MABEL degrades the Santiago Brothers
One of the series’ pivotal confrontations occurs when Louisa (Mutya Orquia) violently reprimands young Erica (Krystal Mejes) over her relationship with Lucas (Andrez del Rosario).
Erica attempts to defend Lucas but is silenced by Beth (Allyson McBride), who insists that there is no difference between the notorious Edong and his brother. Passing by, Edong (Renshi de Guzman) overhears and reminds Beth that she is merely a daughter of a mistress.
The tension peaks when Beth mercilessly brings up the death of Edong and Lucas’ mother, provoking Edong to violently confront both Louisa and Beth, leaving behind a chilling threat.
#6: Beth holds her ground after 14 years
Erica (Kaila Estrada), Beth (Charlie Dizon), Mel (Sue Ramirez), and Alice (Janella Salvador) all reunite at the opening of Lucas’ business in Amurao. Seizing the opportunity, Erica cautions them that the Santiago brothers might be planning something and that they could be connected to Esther’s (Malou Crisologo) disappearance and Celestino’s (Bart Guingona) death.
Beth once again rejects any notion of Lucas’ involvement and delivers an ultimatum: what they did 14 years ago will remain unchallenged. Frustrated, Erica leaves the scene, reminding them that if she turns out to be right, at least she had warned them.
#7: Erica and Lucas miss their chance to catch Esther
In the midst of the frantic chase after the elusive Esther (Malou Crisologo), she knees Lucas (JM de Guzman) and slips away once again. Erica (Kaila Estrada) catches up, finding only Lucas, and accuses him of letting Esther escape.
Soon after, they get into another heated argument, with Erica emphasizing that the Santiago brothers’ possible pursuit of justice through violence is wrong. Lucas disagrees, arguing that the law has been unfair to them—a law he can no longer trust due to its malleability.
#8: Mel takes a stand against Anton
Even the pandemic doesn’t stop Anton (Jameson Blake) from abusing Mel (Sue Ramirez). One day, he is denied permission by authorities to visit his ill sister abroad. In a fit of anger, he throws the phone, and it lands beside Mel’s feet.
Noticing the device but ignoring it, Anton becomes enraged and violently pushes her head, accusing her of being indifferent to his struggle. Mel fires back, berating Anton to stop acting as if he is the only one troubled and warning him not to use this as an excuse to hurt her.
#9: Erica reaches out to Louisa’s brother
Erica (Kaila Estrada) returns to another part of Amurao—Louisa’s (Mutya Orquia) home—where she meets Lemuel (Hero Angeles), Louisa’s older brother, and shares her plans to uncover Louisa’s real killer.
Taken aback, Lemuel insists that Edong was already the killer and should still be rotting in jail if not for Bagumbayan Prison’s failure. He continues to criticize Erica and the rest of MABEL, expressing confusion over why Erica has returned to clear Edong’s name after evidently ruining it.
#10: Another stormy discussion with MABEL
Chloe (Jewel Milag) seizes the chance to eavesdrop on the conversation among the reunited friends: Erica (Kaila Estrada), Beth (Charlie Dizon), Mel (Sue Ramirez), and Alice (Janella Salvador).
They once again discuss Louisa’s (Mutya Orquia) watch, with Beth insisting that Louisa might be deceiving them. Everyone, including Marco (Race Matias), offers their own assumptions about why Louisa kept her relationship a secret—until Beth pushes again, suggesting they might be chasing a non-existent person and that Edong’s (Jake Cuenca) vengeful actions could actually prove he is the killer.
Pushed to her limits, Erica raises her voice, emphasizing that Edong is targeting them because they allowed him to be unfairly incarcerated—a point Beth continues to deny.
