Kapamilya actress Kaila Estrada shared deeper insights into her character Erica in the mystery-thriller series What Lies Beneath. In an exclusive interview with PUSH ABS-CBN, Kaila described her role as a strong and principled woman who is unafraid to stand up for what she believes is right.
“What I love about Erika is matapang siya and she always chooses to do what is right, and I feel like I have high praises for that. I have so much respect for that but, at the end of the day, she is also human and she has weaknesses that you'll gonna see throughout the show,” Kaila said.
Kaila also spoke about her dynamic with the other female characters, noting that while their personalities and perspectives differ, their scenes together reveal a quiet but powerful sense of solidarity.
“I feel like iba-iba kasi kami ng personalities, especially characters namin. We embody different kinds of independent women and iba-iba rin kami on how we face struggles in our lives and ‘yung mga pananaw namin sa buhay, but then seeing us come together in a lot of our scenes, makikita niyo ‘yung unspoken support for each other kahit nakikita niyo kaming nag-aaway away,” Kaila explained.
According to Kaila, this unspoken support reflects real-life relationships among women, saying: “I feel like that says a lot and it happens in real life as well. There's just this unspoken sort of support that women have for each other, and I feel like this series and our characters are the perfect depiction of that.”
Now that the cast has wrapped taping for the series, Kaila shared that she will miss the bond they formed on set, especially given the emotionally heavy material and demanding scenes. “I feel like because the material is so heavy and the scenes are very difficult, ‘yung bonding namin talaga ‘yung niloo-look forward namin every day at ayun ‘yung mamimiss namin as the show comes to end,” she stated.
She also thanked the viewers’ reception for the series. “I’m very happy. I’m very grateful to people na nanonood ng show, that the people are hooked. And I’m excited for what’s next and what’s they about to see next especially that we just wrapped our taping already, so alam na namin kung ano ang mangyayari. And I’m very excited to people to see it and for people to keep on watching.”
“I just want to say to everybody: Thank you so much for your comments, your tweets, your comments on our TikTok pages. Lahat iyon tinitingnan namin, and nagpapasalamat kami sa inyo dahil minahal niyo ‘yung characters namin the same way na minahal namin sila,” she continued.
In a previous interview, Kaila, along with Sue Ramirez, Charlie Dizon and Janella Salvador, admitted how light and easy it was working with one another. Kaila noted how viewers can see through the bond they have offcam.
“It’s a very supportive energy, lalo na samin apat. I feel like makikita ng mga tao ‘yung chemistry talaga naming apat. Maniniwala talaga sila na magkakabarkada kami or childhood [friends] kami kasi parang ganun ‘yung pakiramdam,” Kaila said.
