MANILA -- Four players scored in double-digits as the Creamline Cool Smashers defeated the Akari Chargers for their second straight win in the PVL on Tour, Monday evening at the Chavit Coliseum in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
The Cool Smashers bounced back from a shaky loss in Set 2 to take care of business against Akari, 27-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18, to improve to 2-0 in the preseason.
Michele Gumabao led the way for Creamline with 18 points, while Alyssa Valdez earned Player of the Game honors with 16 points on 13 kills and two aces. Jema Galanza added an all-around performance of 12 points, 18 digs and 10 receptions.
Rookie middle blocker Sheena Toring continued to show her quality, putting up 10 points including two kill blocks.
"We're very happy and grateful na na-apply namin lahat nang na-train namin for the last three weeks, and we're looking forward na mag-improve pa kami," said Valdez after the game.
The Cool Smashers had to save a set point in the opener, with Galanza firing a clutch hit to knot the count at 25. A fine serve by Kyle Negrito put them at set point, before an attack error by Akari's Stephanie Bustrillo sealed the win for Creamline.
Akari returned the favor in Set 2, reaching set point off a crafty drop by Ezra Madrigal. The Cool Smashers stayed alive thanks to a quick hit by Toring, but a sharp crosscourt hit by Grethcel Soltones allowed the Chargers to equalize at one set apiece.
Unfortunately for Akari, they could not sustain that momentum as Creamline took control of the next two frames.
Soltones finished with 18 points on 17 kills to lead Akari, while Ced Domingo scored 12 points against her former team.
Creamline had swept Capital1 in their first game of the PVL on Tour, while Akari is now 0-2, having lost to Cignal HD on Sunday.
