Philippine Coast Guard/FacebookMANILA — A commercial vessel allided with another in a Sulu port after it lost control due to the effects of Typhoon Tino on Tuesday morning, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.
The PCG said the allision at the Port of Jolo involved MV Maria Rebecca of Montenegro Shipping Lines and MV Antonia 1 of Alesson Shipping Lines.
“Initial investigation revealed that rough sea conditions and strong swells brought about by the effect of Typhoon #TinoPH contributed to the loss of maneuvering control of MV Maria Rebecca while attempting to dock, resulting in the vessel’s starboard side beam striking the port forward portion of the moored MV Antonia 1,” said PCG spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab in a statement.
TYhe PCG said the MV Maria Rebecca safely docked later. It also advised the ship captains to file marine protests for documentation and investigation.
The PCG said no casualties, injuries, oil spill or threats to maritime safety were recorded in the initial assessment, but joint inspection and evaluation remain ongoing.

“Initial assessment confirmed no casualties, injuries, or oil spills, and no immediate threat to maritime safety. The extent of structural damage sustained by both vessels remains under joint inspection and evaluation,” Cayabyab said.
“The PCG continues to monitor the situation and coordinates with concerned shipping companies to ensure the safety of port operations in Jolo,” she added.
Typhoon Tino, which has reportedly left 26 dead and thousands affected so far, weakened after making four landfalls in different parts of central Philippines.
Tino will cross southern Panay, Cuyo Islands, and northern Palawan before emerging over the West Philippine Sea Wednesday morning, said state weather bureau PAGASA.
