What Lies Beneath” doesn’t shy away from portraying the many faces of love, including the complex ones that ask for deep empathy. Attorney Erica Melendez (Kaila Estrada), renowned as a fearless and unbeatable lawyer, embodies this kind of love—one marked by hesitation and self-protection.

Her past has left wounds so deep that opening herself to love—or even letting herself be loved—is still a work in progress, marked by serious neglect from her mother, Annette (Sharmaine Suarez); 14 years of guilt for not defending Edong (Jake Cuenca) from unjust imprisonment; and the disbelief of her friends when she confided in them about Edong, all of which pushed her into silence and made her build walls around her heart.

Erica’s refusal of emotional support and unshakable independence serve as her shield against potential betrayal. She continues her path of redemption by helping those in dire need of legal assistance. At a particular time, she admitted she became a lawyer to help Edong and atone for her past mistake, but he refuses, seeking revenge instead.

During moments when loneliness seeped through her soul, Erica would sometimes be intimate with others, only to leave at sunrise, avoiding any commitment. Some of the most meaningful experiences she allowed herself to feel were her first relationship with Lucas (JM de Guzman) in the past and an affectionate encounter with Marco (Race Matias) in the present, yet even after all that, she would still choose to be alone.

The tragic loss of Erica and Lucas’ first love

Before anything else, young Erica (Krystal Mejes) and young Lucas (Andrez del Rosario) were each other’s first love and their only source of strength in the small world of Amurao, a world that had left them deprived of love and family. That bond lasted until the grim moment when Erica’s close friends—Louisa (Mutya Orquia), Beth (Allyson McBride), Alice (Eliza Borromeo), and Mel (Reich Alim)—forcefully separated them.

Believing that Lucas’ brother, the notorious Edong (Renshi de Guzman), might bring Erica more harm, her friends criticized their relationship and eventually clashed with a furious Edong. This confrontation sparked the tragic accusation that Edong had murdered Louisa, creating the rift that drove Erica and Lucas apart.

Years later, as Erica revisits Louisa’s case—still determined to find the real murderer and believing in Edong’s innocence—she reconnects with Lucas, though their reunion is tense, with Lucas harboring resentment toward her silence while Edong was on trial. They cross paths multiple times, from Erica suspecting Lucas’ involvement in Edong’s escape to eventually working together to catch Edong and stop his violent vengeance.

Amid the complexity of their current connection, Erica and Lucas share moments of care—when Lucas let Erica comfort him amid speculations of Edong’s death, and when Erica discovered that it was Lucas who had given her the fifty pesos after she was left alone on the streets of Manila. These moments raise the question of whether they might have another chance at love.

Marco and Erica witness each other’s redemption

Marco entered Erica’s life in desperate circumstances, needing legal help after being falsely accused of sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend. Erica managed to free him, but he could not reunite with his partner and child, who had both been killed. During this time, Erica and Marco worked closely together, with Marco finding a newfound purpose in assisting his savior with her personal investigations.

Throughout Erica’s legal career, Marco was always by her side, no matter the level of danger, even aiding her in the complicated case of Louisa and Edong’s escape from Bagumbayan Prison. Though Erica often insisted she could handle things on her own, Marco knew better—she needed someone to lean on.

At the height of her vulnerability upon encountering her mother, which dredged up traumatic memories, Erica felt her heart draw closer to Marco, who had long hidden his affection, aware of her reluctance to enter a serious relationship.

Feeling a sense of safety and belonging, the two spend the night together, but true to her usual pattern, Erica decides to distance herself, leaving Marco confused and heartbroken. Despite this, Marco remains professional and continues to support Erica in her investigations.

Erica, Marco, and Lucas in a storm of tensions

The path to love remains uncertain between Erica, Marco, and Lucas. As they navigate the chaos caused by Edong’s escape and vengeful schemes, small confrontations inevitably arise—Erica recalling her past with Lucas and Marco stepping in whenever he senses her returning closeness to Lucas, whom he fears would still prioritize Edong over her.

Even so, all three remain steadfast in their roles, determined to put an end to Edong’s fury.
