“What Lies Beneath” gives justice to this kind of love through Mel Barrera-Montenegro’s (Sue Ramirez) painful journey—first with her deceitful husband Anton Montenegro (Jameson Blake) and then with childhood acquaintance Lucas Santiago (JM de Guzman).

After all the hurt and loneliness Mel had endured, she unexpectedly found a sense of safety and belonging in Lucas. Their connection became a surprising twist in the series, as Lucas was formerly Erica’s (Kaila Estrada) lover and the brother of Edong Santiago (Jake Cuenca)—the man Beth, Alice, Erica, and Mel had falsely imprisoned for Louisa’s (Mutya Orquia) death.
One fateful night, the two reunited at a bar as their social circles crossed paths. Mel eagerly approached Lucas, hoping for a fresh start to their friendship, but he persistently ignored her, unable to forget what they had done to his brother.
Moments later, Lucas witnessed Anton abusing Mel, marking the beginning of their reconnection—one that felt different this time. Haunted by the trauma of losing his mother to domestic abuse, Lucas found himself becoming more attached to Mel on a deeper level.
However, Mel’s haven in Lucas soon shatters. Following the news of Edong’s presumed death after escaping Bagumbayan Prison, Mel and Lucas meet again at his residence, only for her to discover that he entered a secret affair with her to extract the truth about the lie she and the rest of MABEL told—one that unjustly imprisoned Edong for fourteen years.
In that instant, even the past moment when Lucas had urged Mel to run away with him and from Anton’s dominance meant nothing, as he was only using her vulnerability for his own gain.
Mel finally chooses herself
After years of enduring abuse, the truth about Anton finally reaches the rest of MABEL. An enraged Anton attacks Mel, Beth, and Erica, while Alice knocks him unconscious. The chaos is set off when Edong discovers Lucas and Mel’s past affair and sends Anton an intimate photo of the two.
In the aftermath of Anton’s violent outburst, Mel confesses her abusive marriage with Anton to everyone—from an emotional meeting with Erica, Beth, and Alice to holding a press conference. The three girls offer to stand as her witnesses in pursuing legal action, with Erica taking on her case as her new attorney. Even her former housemaid, Jo, gathers SINTA to support Mel’s path to liberation.
This is just the beginning for Mel, as Anton’s supporters inevitably try to doubt and discredit her, labeling her a false victim and a gold digger and even making it seem as if she were to blame for Anton’s abuse.
To Mel’s dismay, her father also visits after the press conference but instead of consoling her, he berates her, just as he always had when she was younger. This time, however, Mel finds stronger allies, including her mother, who finally summons the courage to stand up to her husband.
In sum, Mel’s story is not defined by who or how she loved; it’s more about the rocky path she walked that helped her gradually recognize her own worth. Her journey reminds viewers of the kind of love we should seek—starting with ourselves and extending to those around us.
