More than anyone else in the world, our family is who we expect to be our staunchest supporter and greatest cheerleader in every endeavor. However, it’s not the case for the Montenegro family of ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo” since, as avid viewers know, Tanggol (Coco Martin) has been antagonizing his father, Ramon (Christopher de Leon), and grandfather, Don Julio (Tommy Abuel), and vice versa.
Despite having different principles in life, Tanggol chose to still live with them under one roof. Ramon and Don Julio supported his campaign as the next mayor of Manila despite him expressing his huge objection against their illegal businesses.
Now that he has finally discovered Tanggol’s top secret—that he and his friends are the people behind “Wating,” the group who foiled their illegal business transactions not just once but twice already—Ramon is undoubtedly furious at them, especially at his son, for betraying them.
As we look forward to seeing if Ramon will really annihilate the friends of Tanggol as his way of exacting vengeance on him and teaching him a lesson, let us look back on the previous instances when the father and son figured in intense quarrels through the clips that we’ve collated in this Friday 5 feature!
Wating’s intrusion into Ramon’s business transaction with their foreign suppliers isn’t the first time. It can be recalled that it was also Tanggol and his friends who disrupted the supposed deal of Ramon with their Korean business partner, Mr. Arthur Kwon (Leo Martinez), by also confiscating the illegal drugs and money that they were supposed to use in the transaction.
Of course, it completely upset Ramon, as they didn’t only lose a whopping amount of money and a potential business partner, but they might also lose the business empire that he and Don Julio have painstakingly built after Mr. Kwon threatened to tarnish their reputation by warning other businessmen about working along with them. As Ramon accosted him for disgracing their family in front of the Kwons, Tanggol infuriatingly told him that he sacrificed his life to protect the money and drugs, so he didn’t have the right to scold him.
The father and son’s quarrel that day didn’t end there, as they once again figured in a heated spat after Tanggol approached Ramon regarding Rigor’s (John Estrada) unexpected visit at the mansion to look for Marites (Cherry Pie Picache). As Tanggol upbraided him for not heeding his suggestion to not allow Marites to live with them due to safety reasons, Ramon retorted that he didn’t have the right to decide on it and explained that he was just trying to fix their family. They made amends afterwards, apologizing to one another for letting their temper and the goings-on earlier that day get the best of them.
They had another argument when Ramon criticized Tanggol for being disrespectful towards Marites during one of their conversations. While he clearly understood where he was coming from, Ramon advised Tanggol to give Marites a chance to become a mother to him. However, Tanggol was reluctant, telling Ramon that he was already weary of making an effort for her, only to end up being taken for granted and ignored.
Just when we thought that their relationship was already okay since Ramon and Don Julio had given their all-out support to Tanggol in his bid to become the next mayor of Manila, it turned out that they’re still actually not. As Ramon conveyed his eagerness towards his victory, as it would give him more power to protect the Montenegro business empire, Tanggol finally told him that doing so was actually not part of his plan once elected.
He told Ramon that his main goal in running for mayor is to put Manila in order, to help alleviate the lives of the people, and to mend the problems caused by the Guerreros during their reign. A scorching altercation then ensued between them, with both of them reiterating their respective sides to one another. Tanggol strongly argued that they could never make him blindly obey everything that they would want him to do.
Their dispute continued the next day, with Don Julio meddling in their spat—in favor, of course, of Ramon. The old man told his grandson that they are willing to support whatever causes or projects that Tanggol will advocate or implement once elected as mayor, but he must not also forget or set aside his responsibilities as the only heir of the Montenegros. A heated argument sparked among them anew, with Tanggol warning them that once he became the mayor, he would not hesitate to go against them and shut down their illegal drug trade even though they are his family—much to the ire of Ramon and Don Julio.
