MANILA, Philippines – Down two sets, Petro Gazz pulled off a dramatic reverse sweep, overcoming a rough start en route to a 20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15, 15-7 triumph over Chery Tiggo in the 2024-25 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference on Tuesday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
This win allowed Petro Gazz to stay on top, extending its winning streak to five for a 6-1 win-loss card. Meanwhile, Chery Tiggo dropped to 4-3 slate, settling for the current fifth spot.
The comeback started with a 7-1 run late in Set 3, as the Angels tore down a 22-18 Chery Tiggo lead to get on board.
And then another rally from the Angels allowed them to equalize, uncorking 11 unanswered points from the 14-15 count to clinch Set 4, 25-15.
MVP Brooke Van Sickle flipped the switch, listing seven points in the Angels' first nine markers in the decider to steal the match entirely and close out the five-set marathon which
Van Sickle did not start for the first time this season, but she made sure to make an impact to the surging Angels.
"I'm super proud of everyone. I'm pretty sure almost the whole team played, I feel like. And everyone brought great energy. It didn't matter who was on the court," said Van Sickle during the postgame press conference.
"We were able to figure it out, go through the rough patches, and work on it. So, I feel like we got better today as a team," the pride of San Emilio, Ilocos Sur added. "So, I'm really happy."
There were a lot of heroes for Petro Gazz in the two-hour, 32-minute encounter, as another MVP in Myla Pablo and Shakey's V-League top plum recipient Aiza Maizo-Pontillas bannered the offense with 18 points each.
Van Sickle concluded the match with a double-double of 10 points and 11 excellent digs, while Nicole Tiamzon added 11 markers. Jellie Tempiatura made sure to do her part in making the ball alive, listing 20 excellent digs. Chie Saet also pulled the strings as she tallied 12 excellent sets.
Meanwhile, three Crossovers were in twin-digit scoring — a silver lining for the losing side — as they saw Cza Carandang log 13 points, Pau Gaston chip in 12, and Jasmine Nabor score 10.
