MANILA — Tropical storm Maymay made landfall over Magsingal, Ilocos Sur at 2 a.m. Thursday, according to PAGASA.

As of 4 a.m., it was in the vicinity of San Juan, Ilocos Sur.

Maymay slightly weakened after landfall, now packing winds of 65 kilometers per hour with gusts up to 110 kph. It is moving eastward at 10 kph.

Tropical cyclone wind signal no. 2 remains hoisted over:

• Ilocos Norte

• northern and central Ilocos Sur

• Abra

• western Apayao

• western Kalinga

• western Mountain Province

Meanwhile, wind signal no. 1 is still in effect over:

• rest of Ilocos Sur

• La Union

• Northwestern Pangasinan

• rest of Apayao

• rest of Kalinga

• rest of Mountain Province

• Ifugao

• Benguet

• Cagayan

• Isabela

• Nueva Vizcaya

• Quirino

• Northern and central Aurora

Strong winds will continue to affect these areas, with minor to moderate impacts.

Maymay will weaken into a tropical depression while crossing Northern Luzon. It may be downgraded into a low pressure area once it emerges over the Philippine Sea and eventually merge with the broad circulation of Typhoon Dolphin.

PAGASA said it is not ruling out Maymay’s much earlier weakening due to its interaction with the mountainous terrain of Northern Luzon.

MAYMAY, HABAGAT TO DRENCH LUZON

Maymay will continue to bring significant rains over Northern Luzon this Thursday.

Heavy to intense rainfall (100-200 millimeters)

• Ilocos Sur

• La Union

• Pangasinan

• Benguet

Moderate to heavy rainfall (50-100 mm)

• Ilocos Norte

• Abra

• Apayao

• Kalinga

• Mountain Province

• Ifugao

• Nueva Vizcaya

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon or Habagat affects Metro Manila, Central and Southern Luzon, and Western Visayas, with moderate to heavy rains expected in many areas.

Once Maymay has dissipated, Habagat will dominate Luzon and Visayas. Significant rains may be expected over the western portions of Luzon and Panay through the weekend.

The risk of flooding and landslides remains high in many areas, especially given the amount of prior rainfall in some localities.

NO WIND SIGNALS EXPECTED FOR DOLPHIN

Outside the Philippine area of responsibility, Typhoon Dolphin was located 1,450 kilometers east northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon at 3 a.m.

It has maximum sustained winds of 150 kph with gustiness up to 185 kph and is moving west northwestward at 20 kph.

It is less likely to enter the PAR but will pass north of the country as it heads towards eastern China.

Dolphin will enhance the Habagat after Maymay has dissipated.

Despite the typhoon’s large wind field, raising of wind signals over Extreme Northern Luzon is less likely, according to PAGASA.

The public is advised to continue monitoring updates on the weather and take the necessary preparations.
