MANILA — Tropical storm Maymay accelerated as it moves closer to the Ilocos Norte-Ilocos Sur area on Wednesday night.
At 10 p.m., it was over the coastal waters of Magsingal, Ilocos Sur.
It packs winds of 75 kilometers per hour with gusts up to 90 kph and is moving eastward at 20 kph.
Wind signal no. 2 remains hoisted over the following areas:
Ilocos Norte
Ilocos Sur
northern and central La Union
northwestern Pangasinan
Abra
western Apayao
western Kalinga
western Mountain Province
northwestern Benguet
northwestern mainland Cagayan
Meanwhile, signal no. 1 is still up over the rest of mainland Northern Luzon and parts of Central Luzon.
Maymay may make landfall over the Ilocos Norte-Ilocos Sur area late Wednesday or early Thursday.
It may weaken into a tropical depression while crossing Northern Luzon.
It may be downgraded further into a low pressure area over the Philippine Sea.
Due to interaction with the mountainous terrain of Northern Luzon, earlier weakening is possible.
Maymay will bring significant rainfall over Northern and Central Luzon through Thursday evening, with torrential rains expected in Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Benguet especially in the early hours of Thursday.
After Maymay’s weakening and eventual dissipation, the southwest monsoon or Habagat will eventually dominate Luzon and Visayas until the weekend.
Heavy rains will persist over the western parts of Luzon, especially in La Union, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.
Widespread and serious flooding and landslides are possible across many areas, especially those that had significant amount of prior rainfall.
The bad weather brought by Maymay and the habagat has prompted Malacañang to suspend classes and government work on Thursday, August 6, in the National Capital Region and 22 other provinces.
