The La Playa Roja siege did not just show us how the guests and staff would do anything to escape captivity---it also revealed the inner turmoil and eventual sacrifices each character made out of love for their families and friends. Here are 5 moments when the “Roja” characters embodied the true meaning of love, loyalty, and sacrifice during the siege.
1. Wendy's sacrifice for Greta and Olsen
Greta (Lorna Tolentino) had previously faced charges of estafa, and to escape the situation, she asked Wendy (Janice de Belen) for a favor: to serve time in jail in her place, in exchange for covering Olsen’s (Kyle Echarri) hospital bills. Greta promised Wendy that she would take care of Olsen and her family.
After ten years of imprisonment, Wendy was finally released. Greta fulfilled her promise by giving Wendy one million pesos, and together they vowed that no one would ever discover this dark secret. Out of love for both Olsen and Greta, Wendy agreed to go to jail---sacrificing her freedom to protect them.
2. Liam sets aside his anger towards Greta
After going head-to-head with Emil (Joel Torre) and his armed men, Liam (Donny Pangilinan) was left in critical condition from a gunshot wound. Greta, deeply worried, tended to him with care. When the truth about Wendy’s imprisonment was revealed, Liam was furious at Greta. But after reflecting that Greta and Wendy may have acted out of concern for their families, he began to see things differently.
Realizing that Wendy and Greta had made their deal out of love, Liam chose to set aside his anger and forgive Greta. Despite everything, he still loved his mother, and in the midst of the hostage crisis at the resort, he knew they needed more understanding. Liam vowed to protect his family and the victims of the siege.
3. Ben sacrifices his life for Olsen
As things grew more intense, the hostages became desperate to escape the island---including Olsen and Lolo Ben (Levi Ignacio). After rescuing Macky (Kobie Brown) from the goons, gunfire erupted between Emil’s armed men and the victims. Olsen, Fin (Igi Boy Flores), and Ben fought back, aiming shots at the attackers.
In the chaos, Olsen tried to protect Luna (Maymay Entrata) and Ice (Kai Montinola). But when Dado (Bernard Palanca) pointed his gun at Olsen and fired, Ben stepped into the line of fire---taking the bullet and sacrificing his life to save Olsen. The moment left Olsen and Wendy devastated. Olsen wept, questioning why Ben chose to give up his life for him, torn by the truth that his survival came at the cost of Ben’s.
4. Liam and Olsen chose to rekindle their friendship
After finally gaining their freedom and receiving aid at the nearest hospital, Liam and Olsen had the chance to talk things through after the siege. Following their constant arguments over family secrets, the two decided to set aside their past issues.
They bonded over a meal, reflecting on how both they and their families had risked everything during the siege to save those around them. Both Liam and Olsen thanked each other for saving one another’s lives. They also both apologized for their past conflicts and realized that, above all, they would do anything to protect their families.
5. Liam refuses to abandon Olsen
Emil and his armed men continued the siege, this time targeting the hospital where many of the resort’s victims were receiving aid. As Lucas (Marc Abaya) attempted to capture Liam and Greta, Olsen rushed to protect them. But Lucas threw an explosive device, triggering an explosion that left everyone unconscious for several minutes.
Later on, Liam immediately tried to help Greta and Olsen escape. Olsen, however, remained unconscious, and Greta urged Liam to leave him behind. Liam refused, insisting he could not abandon Olsen---believing he might even be his brother. Liam fought to save Olsen, even as Emil and his armed men closed in.
The “Roja” siege pulled us deeper into the lives of each character, allowing us to understand the reasons behind their choices. Even when those decisions carried heavy consequences, they were still rooted in love---for friends, for family, and for the people they held dear.
