As the new year begins, a brand-new challenge greeted “Your Face Sounds Familiar” breakout crooner Jarlo Base. In Round 7 of the competition (January 3 episode), how was a 'buff' guy supposed to transform into the legendary Amy Winehouse?
During his mentoring session with the show’s resident vocal coach Klarisse De Guzman, he was taught Amy’s signature vocal fry, and that his voice had to sound smoky. As for the body language, coach Nyoy Volante emphasized Amy’s femininity had a bit of attitude, almost feisty in style. But beyond the voice and movement, the biggest challenge for Jarlo was wearing high heels all throughout the “Rehab” performance.
But his first gender switch turned out to be impressive. Megastar Sharon Cuneta expressed how proud she was of how Jarlo has grown so comfortable on the 'YFSF' stage, and even guest judge Erik Santos saw how he channeled Amy's expressive personality. Gary Valenciano added that Jarlo stayed consistently in character during the performance, and even though he said he felt uncomfortable, the portrayal was still very effective from start to finish
Since Jarlo’s big biceps made a ‘hilarious’ contrast to the mini dress he wore, hosts Vhong Navarro and Jhong Hilario thought of challenging the other male performers who had also experienced gender switching—Jason Dy and JM Dela Cerna—to do a quick gender switch again by giving their flirtiest sounds (as Britney Spears for Jason and Elphaba for JM). Of course, the boys were so game and entertaining!
