It seemed that Jason Dy went back to his pre-showbiz gig as a “haranista”, or serenader, as he transformed into English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran and serenaded us with one of his well-loved hits “Perfect”, in the Round 7 of “Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 4” that commenced on Saturday, December 27.
Apparently, performing the song wasn’t new for the “Prince of Soul” anymore, as he related that it has been part of his repertoire, or the collection of songs that he usually sings in his gigs. Nonetheless, he still went through the mentoring sessions of resident voice coach Klarisse de Guzman and movement coach Nyoy Volante since he had to do it this time not as himself but as the original singer.
Right at the very moment he stepped out of the “iconator” and sang the first line of “Perfect”, Jason was able to immediately catch everyone’s attention with how he looked and sounded quite like Ed. He further got us entertained with his British accent when he bantered with hosts Vhong Navarro and Jhong Hilario, who requested for him to sing the song again as they performed a comedic dance interpretation of it.
Aside from being amused by his hilarious impersonation of guest juror Erik Santos and his fellow celebrity performer Rufa Mae Quinto, the jury also conveyed how impressed they were with Jason’s “perfect” portrayal of Ed—from the way he looked to the way he performed and projected onstage just like him.
