It takes guts to impersonate a legend, especially when that legend is sitting just a few feet away. But in Round 7 of "Your Face Sounds Familiar," Alexa Ilacad bravely stepped into the shoes of Sharon Cuneta, performing “Mr. DJ” as a heartfelt tribute to the Megastar on her birthday week.
Despite her voice slightly raspy due to feeling under the weather, Alexa powered through by taking in all the tips from mentors Klarisse De Guzman and Nyoy Volante. They specifically guided her to channel Sharon’s signature pleasant smile toward the audience and to embody Sharon's sound from her 'young star' era since she was just 12 when she recorded "Mr. DJ."
Sharon appreciated the tribute and even joined Alexa for a sweet duet on stage. “Mr. DJ,” written by Rey Valera, became her first big hit and remains iconic to this day. From that 12-year-old sweetheart to the now 60-year-old Megastar, her glow has never faded.
To celebrate her 60th birthday (which is on January 6), Sharon received a sweet surprise from her “Your Face Sounds Familiar” family. Guest judge Erik Santos gave a heartfelt message, calling her the biggest star this country has ever produced. Gary Valenciano, whom Sharon fondly calls her “kuya,” turned sentimental as he reminded her of just how deeply she’s loved. Gary also recalled how he used to wait for her outside her school just to catch a glimpse of the young Sharon he looked up to so much.
