Vice Ganda and acclaimed director Jun Robles Lana reunite for another Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) project, “Call Me Mother” — and this time, they're joined by none other than Nadine Lustre. The film was officially unveiled as one of the first four entries in the 51st MMFF during the Grand Launch held at the Glorietta Palm Drive Activity Center in Makati on July 8.
Described as a comedy-drama, the movie is a co-production by ABS-CBN Film Productions Inc., The IdeaFirst Company, and Viva Communications Inc.
Written by Daisy G. Cayanan, Daniel S. Saniana and Jun Robles Lana, “Call Me Mother” bares the following synopsis:
Fabulous single queer mother, Twinkle, plans on surprising her loving adoptive son, Angel, with a Disneyland trip by finalizing his adoption papers – if and only if nobody claims Angel within three months. But the unexpected arrival of Mara starts to complicate their peaceful life.
Shook by Mara’s arrival, Twinkle goes the extra mile to prove that she is a caring and capable mother to Angel – resulting in over-the-top hilarious means to assure Mara that Angel is already in good loving hands.
As the end of the three-month adoption process comes to a close, a surprising and threatening bond between Mara and Angel forms. Can Twinkle prove that motherhood lies not in biology, but in profound, unwavering devotion?
“Call Me Mother” marks Vice Ganda’s second consecutive collaboration with director Jun Robles Lana, following last year’s 50th MMFF entry “And The Breadwinner Is…”. It also stands as Vice’s ninth official MMFF entry, continuing a long streak of holiday blockbusters that include “Sisterakas” (2012), “Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy” (2013), “The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin” (2014), “Beauty and the Bestie” (2015), “Gandarrapiddo: The Revenger Squad” (2017), “Fantastica” (2018), “The Mall, the Merrier” (2019), and “Partners in Crime” (2022).
"Call Me Mother” will be shown exclusively in cinemas on December 25.
Also joining the initial lineup of MMFF entries are “Rekonek”, “Manila’s Finest”, and “Shake, Rattle and Roll: Evil Origins”. A total of eight films will be featured in this year’s highly anticipated festival, which carries the theme “A New Era for Philippine Cinema.”
