Netflix has announced that Sesame Street will be joining its streaming lineup later this year, marking a new chapter for the iconic children’s program.

The platform revealed on Tuesday, May 20, that the show's 56th season will be available to audiences worldwide, alongside 90 hours of past episodes.

According to Netflix's Tudum, the upcoming season introduces a refreshed format and the return of fan-favorite segments such as "Elmo’s World" and "Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck." Viewers can also look forward to interactive features like Cookie Monster’s new Cookie Cart and Abby’s Fairy Garden, a whimsical space filled with magical creatures.

Each episode will now focus on a single 11-minute storyline, offering a more character-driven approach.

New episodes will debut simultaneously in the United States on PBS stations and PBS KIDS digital platforms.

Sesame Street is produced by Sesame Workshop, a global nonprofit, with Sal Perez and Kay Wilson Stallings serving as executive producers.

Halcyon Person, who is an Emmy, Humanitas, and NAACP Award nominee known for Karma’s World and Dee & Friends in Oz, joins the team as head writer.

Fans online were quick to express their excitement about the announcement.

"BEST NEWS EVER! I owe my English-speaking skills to Sesame Street, having consumed copious amounts of it back in the '80s. My kids also went through their Sesameducation as toddlers and I'm happy to report all speak well and have very fond memories of this show," one fan wrote.

"Instantly started singing the song like I was a child again," another fan wrote.

Following the announcement, Sesame Street released a statement on its Instagram page, expressing its excitement for this new chapter for the program.

"The support of @netflix, @pbs, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting serve as a unique public-private partnership to enable Sesame Street to continue to help children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder," the statement read.

The announcement follows the end of Sesame Street’s partnership with HBO and Max in December 2024, and comes weeks after President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to halt direct funding to NPR and PBS.
