MANILA -- Kapamilya actor Carlo Aquino praised his leading lady, Julia Barretto, for her outstanding performance in their Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry “Hold Me Close.”

Aquino described her portrayal as “Best Actress-worthy,” adding that it could likely hold its own alongside the performances of seasoned veterans in this year’s MMFF lineup, such as Vilma Santos and Judy Ann Santos.

“Sobrang husay kaya ni Juju dito, ‘di ba direk?” the actor said during the romcom’s grand media conference held in Quezon City, Friday afternoon.

Barretto, however, remained humble, saying she feels honored simply to be part of the festival’s milestone 50th year.

“Sobra ko sila idolo. Even to be mentioned with their name, nakaka-dyahe siya. But I think this film, making it and being included, is such a great honor,” she said.

Barretto and Aquino hope to tug on the heartstrings of moviegoers  this Christmas with “Hold Me Close,” written and directed by Jason Paul Laxamana.

Set in Karatsu, Japan, the story follows Woody (Aquino), a “wondering soul” searching for a place to finally call home, who meets Lynlyn (Barretto ), a charismatic squid vendor who has been wary of forming connections due to her psychic gift.

“Hold Me Close” marks the second time Barretto and Aquino are sharing the big screen following their 2022 movie, “Expensive Candy,” also helmed by Laxamana.
