(UPDATED) Gilas Pilipinas is off to a winning start in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games after getting an 83-58 result against Malaysia on Sunday afternoon at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
After falling behind, 16-22, after the opening quarter, Gilas limited Malaysia to a paltry four points in the second quarter to take complete control of the contest, 42-26.
Malaysia recovered in the third period and were within striking distance, 62-51, but Gilas responded by out-scoring them 21-7 in the final frame to put the finishing touches on the huge win.
Ray Parks Jr. led the way for the Philippines with 18 points, while Robert Bolick, who is serving as the team's captain, had 17 points and six rebounds. Thirdy Ravena had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double.
"We have to get better as the tournament goes on. This was our first game in the group so when I say first game, first game talaga. Defensively, we played well in the second and third quarter," said coach Norman Black.
"We weren't that good in the first and fourth quarter. So, we just have to work and improve, watch the tapes, and figure out how we can get better while we're here," he added.
"Hopefully, we'll get another victory against Vietnam in our next game."
Gilas shot only 33.3% from the field but made 30 of 35 free throws while scoring 22 points from Malaysia's 17 turnovers.
Chun Hong Ting led Malaysia with 21 points.
The Philippines will go for a sweep of its pool assignment and a semifinals spot against Vietnam on Monday.
