From a lanky teenager who initially captured the hearts of his kababayans from his hometown of General Santos City, Gerald Anderson has indeed already come a long way. Over the past 20 years, we’ve witnessed his remarkable transformation from a promising teen heartthrob to a seasoned leading man, captivating audiences with every role and solidifying his status as one of ABS-CBN's most enduring figures.
And this 2026, as he marks his 20th anniversary in showbiz, Gerald celebrates this milestone by starring in the upcoming ABS-CBN Studios series “Blood vs Duty.” But before we get to see him in a totally different light, let’s look back on his evolution as a TV actor via this Spotlight feature!
He was just 17 when he entered the public sphere and stepped into the spotlight as one of the housemates of the inaugural Teen Edition of “Pinoy Big Brother” in 2006. Known as “Ang Amboy Hottie ng GenSan,” he drew widespread attention and admiration for his undeniable charm and striking handsomeness and finished 3rd Big Placer by the end of their edition.
A slew of projects immediately welcomed him upon returning to the outside world, which allowed him to develop and showcase his promising acting skills. Together with ex-housemate-turned-on-and-off-screen partner Kim Chiu, they appeared in several ABS-CBN programs, such as “Love Spell,” “Your Song,” “Aalog-alog,” and “Gokada Go!” that indeed displayed their palpable chemistry as a loveteam.
His first breakthrough came less than a year after his victorious “PBB” stint concluded when he and Kim, whose tandem has been fondly called “KimErald,” were tapped to headline the phenomenal 2007 primetime drama “Sana Maulit Muli,” charming viewers as Travis “Bokbok” Johnson.
The following year, he and Kim were cast in the horror-drama series “Maligno,” which was the second installment of “Sineserye Presents: The Susan Roces Cinema Collection.” He played the role of Joaquin Valderrama, cameraman and close friend of Kim’s character, Eliza Catacutan, who eventually became her love interest.
Just a couple of days after the said program concluded, KimErald went on to star in the Philippine adaptation of the 2005 hit Korean drama “My Girl,” winning hearts as Julian Abueva—the Filipino counterpart of the character originally portrayed by renowned Korean actor Lee Dong-wook.
In 2009, he got to showcase his promising acting chops in the primetime series “Tayong Dalawa” by portraying one of the main characters, David “JR” Garcia Jr., alongside Kim and Jake Cuenca. It was followed by his stint as the titular character in the “Tiagong Akyat” narrative of the fantasy anthology “Agimat: Ang Mga Alamat ni Ramon Revilla.”
Gerald then became part of the 2010 all-star cast primetime drama “Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo,” playing the role of Robbie Castillo, the love child of the characters of Albert Martinez and Jaclyn Jose.
As his love team era eventually came to a close after parting ways with Kim, he began exploring more complex and challenging roles that allowed him to expand his range and redefine his craft.
2011 was indeed a big and busy year for him since he didn’t only star in one but two shows. He began the year as martial artist-turned-superhero Jack Isidro in the fantaserye “Buhawi Jack,” which was based on the comic strip of the same title by veteran comics writer and illustrator Rod Santiago and was the first series of the long-running fantasy anthology “Wansapanataym.”
Months later, he went on to astound us with his commendable and heartfelt portrayal of the titular character stricken with Angelman Syndrome in the primetime drama “Budoy.”
The seasoned actor was then cast in the 2013 drama series “Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin” as Miguel Dizon, a man seeking justice for himself. It was followed by his stint in the TV remake of the classic “Mars Ravelo’s Dyesebel” in 2014, captivating audiences as Fredo Montilla, one of the love interests of the titular character, played by Anne Curtis. Later that year, he landed a role in the “Gift of Life” narrative of ABS-CBN Studios’ seasonal offering “Give Love on Christmas.”
In 2015, he became an onscreen dad for the first time via the inspirational kiddie series “Nathaniel,” as he played the role of Paul Laxamana, the father of the titular character impressively portrayed by then-child star Marco Masa.
KimErald fans surely rejoiced when Gerald got reunited with Kim in 2017 on TV. It started in the “Maalaala Mo Kaya” episode titled “Sulat,” wherein they portrayed lead characters and lovers Bernard and Cze. It was followed by the daytime sports drama series “Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin,” taking on the role of triathlete Gabriel Viloria, who eventually got married to his estranged childhood friend, Kim’s character Bianca.
A couple of years later, he went back to doing action-drama series through “A Soldier’s Heart,” where he played Pfc. Alexander “Alex” Marasigan, an IT expert who quit his desk job and joined the 4th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army to serve the country.
The following year, he shared the screen with Yam Concepcion and JM de Guzman, setting primetime ablaze with their enthralling performances in the sexy drama series “Init Sa Magdamag.” He captivated viewers as charming doctor-to-the-barrio Christopher “Tupe” Salcedo
Gerald took on another steamy drama in 2022 with “A Family Affair,” winning over viewers as Paco Estrella, with whom lead female protagonist Cherry Red (Ivana Alawi) got married and had a child.
Three years later, he astounded viewers with his flair in action and drama via “Sins of the Father,” as he portrayed Samuel Trinidad, a man ensnared in the dark world of scamming because of his late father.
He also lent his impeccable dramatic prowess in other “MMK” episodes, through which he earned several acting awards and nominations from various award-giving bodies. Among these were “Bus,” “Jacket,” “Bituin,” “Class Picture,” and “Lubid”.
And soon, we’re going to see him in another action-drama series as he takes on the lead role of Jalil in “Blood vs Duty,” a principled Muslim man who finds himself entangled in a gun-dealing syndicate, which the police force, led by Richard Gutierrez’s character Marcus, will attempt to dismantle.
