“What Lies Beneath” wonderfully progresses into a beautifully laid-out narrative as each episode sheds crucial light on nuanced conflicts that mirror reality, including the universally significant bond between a mother and her daughter, consistently shown through Beth Sevilla-Mora (Charlie Dizon) and Chloe Mora (Jewel Milag).
These five moments of Beth and Chloe’s mother-daughter duo undoubtedly teach viewers that no relationship is flawless, even within a family. What matters is how each accepts the other for who they are and who they’re trying to be.
#1: Beth feels proud of Chloe’s pursuit of the truth
In one episode, viewers gain further insight about Chloe’s fierce personality, especially as a young truth-seeker and an aspiring journalist. She unfortunately finds herself in Principal Liwanag’s office alongside her mother, Beth, to address the serious repercussions of her explainer video about Amurao High’s strict censorship surrounding Councilor Alvarez’s recent sexual harassment case.
Furious, Principal Liwanag criticizes Chloe’s careless opinions, emphasizing that any statements—even by the school paper—about the councilor’s issue are silenced, since the councilor plays a vital role in funding Amurao High. Chloe understands the dilemma but leans toward righteousness, refusing to stay silent about the harassment victim and continuing to demand accountability for any corrupt politician’s wrongdoings.
Finding Chloe unbearable, the principal reminds Beth of her responsibility for Chloe before she receives another warning of suspension. Moments later, Chloe and Beth converse lightheartedly, with Beth occasionally reminding her to be careful but ultimately proud of Chloe’s principles.
#2: Chloe admires Beth and her friendship with Louisa and Erica
Still recovering from her recent encounter with Edong (Jake Cuenca), Chloe begins asking more about Beth’s past friendship with Louisa and Erica. After a few moments of thought, Beth softly recalls how Louisa (Mutya Orquia) was the bravest of the MABEL girls yet unfortunately had her reputation ruined by the gossips from Amurao’s residents. Despite this, Louisa soldiers on, fighting back without seeking revenge that could hurt others.
Hearing this, Chloe’s mood brightens, noting that Beth shares similarities with Louisa: even when people discriminate against them, they remain steadfast in defending their truths. Chloe also brings up Erica (Kaila Estrada), prompting Beth to surprisingly reminisce about Erica’s younger days, when she was quiet and timid, quite different from her current fearless personality.
#3: Chloe decides to save Beth by contacting Erica
In the aftermath of Beth’s hospitalization—which they didn’t realize was caused by Edong—Beth asks Chloe if she had overheard the conversation about reaching out to Erica for help in Beth and Ryan’s (Yves Flores) investigation of Liezel (Mary Joy Apostol) and Angelo (Marlo Mortel).
Turning sullen, Chloe admits that she had heard about Beth’s hesitancy in telling Erica about her hunches. Ryan then reassures Chloe that everything has calmed down and that neither Angelo nor Liezel was actually involved in Louisa’s murder.
Realizing the good news, Chloe excitedly rushes to inform her best friend, Joshua (Lawrence Dela Cruz), but is briefly stopped by Beth, who is curious why Chloe had to contact Erica when they could handle the issue on their own.
Facing the matter, Chloe explains her intense worry about Beth being exposed to harm again, emphasizing that although she knows about Beth’s complicated past with Erica, she was desperate to save her as quickly as she could.
#4: Beth runs into Chloe’s doubts
With more complex revelations emerging, the bond between Beth and Chloe is inevitably tested further. In one after-school moment, Beth stumbles upon Chloe waiting alone by the staircase, and Chloe proceeds to ask a question that has been haunting her for quite some time.
Regarding Beth’s unfulfilled dream of becoming a journalist, Chloe wonders why she hasn’t pursued it. Startled, Beth immediately explains that she wanted to focus on their family.
Chloe continues, pointing out that journalists can also have families, yet Beth insists that being a teacher is her current goal. Not wanting to press Beth for more answers, Chloe decides to simply confirm whether Beth is truly being honest—but Beth can only offer an uncertain look.
#5: Chloe cries at the thought of her family slowly breaking apart
Following the traumatic events of Edong infiltrating Chloe’s room and wickedly placing a bloodied dead cat on her bed, Beth and Ryan approach her to talk about the anxiety she has developed.
Tearfully, Chloe confesses that she overheard Ryan and Beth arguing—specifically the moment when she discovered Beth’s unhappiness with her current life. Despite Beth’s attempts to deny it, Chloe reiterates how Beth didn’t respond when Ryan asked whether she would still choose them if given the chance to start over.
As Chloe expresses her pain, Beth embraces her, reassuring her that she would never regret having Chloe and that she loves their family wholeheartedly, making them her life.
With Edong in the picture, Chloe explains that ever since he appeared, things have changed drastically, and her greatest fear is Ryan and Beth splitting up due to Edong’s meddling.
