Just on the earliest episodes of the series, it could already be deduced that Sarah and Chito have a dysfunctional relationship with the way he mistreats her as he tends to manipulate, gaslight, and emotionally abuse her. But in spite of these, she still chooses to stick by him to the point that she would side with him over her own child.
While there were instances when Sarah’s facet as a kind and loving mother would show up as she expressed her worry towards her daughter, Chito, on the other hand, never showed remorse for what they’d done or what happened to Grace. Instead, he was happy that she was gone and out of his sight, not to mention that he was able to get his hands on the monetary donations they had received that were supposed to be used to find the little girl. He was able to influence her to splurge the money on unnecessary stuff and give some to him, which he used to gamble.
Aside from taking advantage of the public’s concern and empathy towards their family, the couple had gone to further become partners in crime as they teamed up in saving one another from the messes they had made—with Chito stealing Miranda’s (Sharon Cuneta) jewelries while Sarah getting imprisoned for allegedly scorching the house-slash-inn of Anna’s (Julia Montes) family.
There might be times when Sarah would betray Chito and yell at him yet we still find her coming back to him over and over again. Besides, despite their arguments, she always heeds his suggestions on how they would escape the authorities and maneuver their way out of the troubles they’re embroiled in.
Now that they’d lost an ally in Miranda after she found out that they have been just fooling her and the public with their fabricated stories to gain sympathy, Chito and Sarah are only left with each other again.
