For the second week in a row, JM Dela Cerna had to perform solo as his singing partner, Marielle Montellano, focused on her recovery. Yet even on his own, JM carried the JMielle banner with confidence and heart.
In Round 4 of “Your Face Sounds Familiar,” JM and Marielle were originally assigned to perform Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s “Islands in the Stream,” but with Marielle absent, JM had to make a quick adjustment and switched to “Through the Years,” calibrating everything for a solo stage.
In the mentoring session, vocal coach Klarisse De Guzman pointed out that JM needed to match the American singer-songwriter's raspy voice, while movement coach Nyoy Volante taught him the subtle nuances needed to complete the transformation.
When JM emerged from the ‘iconator’ and delivered his performance, the jury closed their eyes as if listening to a soothing serenade, with Nyoy praising him as one of the strongest contenders this season, and Klarisse commending the composure he showed in adjusting to unexpected changes.
Although Ogie Alcasid was pleased with the performance, he noted that JM’s naturally lighter vocal tone made it quite different from the deeper voice of the Country Music Hall of Famer, while Sharon Cuneta added that JM proved he can shine onstage even without his duo partner. To cheer him on, Marielle appeared via live video call to express her support and tell him how proud she was of the standout performance he gave.
