In the fourth episode of “What Lies Beneath,” the pivotal flashbacks resume, this time reminding the audience of Lucas (Andrez del Rosario/ JM de Guzman) and Edong’s (Renshi de Guzman/Jake Cuenca) unbreakable brotherly bond in spite of their difficult circumstances. After seeing Edong’s beaten state during his visit to the jail, Lucas vowed to do everything in his power to free him.
A stronger Erica finally faces Edong
In another space where freedom and justice are yearned for, Erica (Kaila Estrada) inside the court wins the case for her clients accused of destructive arson. She promises to keep supporting victims of injustice, including those who have been harmed by the NLEA’s faulty hot pursuits and warrantless arrests.
Erica visits Edong in prison after winning the case, but not before speaking with the assistant watch at the prison. The police officer reminds her about following procedures, particularly noting that she is not included in the list of Edong’s visitors.
Citing Edong’s unlawful phone call, she vehemently challenges the “procedures” and vows to inform the bureau director of the occurrence. In an effort to defuse the situation, the police officer tells her that the matter will be looked into and brings up Edong’s well-regarded reputation within the prison, which includes even assisting the guards in keeping the peace and establishing a “saint-like” image.
Soon after, Edong and Erica finally go face-to-face. She claims that the guilt she feels over Edong’s unfair incarceration has prevented her from getting a good night’s sleep for the past 14 years.
To no avail, Edong refuses to understand Erica’s reasoning for not helping him, comparing how the girls weren’t beaten nearly to death or called dehumanizing and degrading names that strip away one’s sense of dignity and worth.
Right before Edong completely walks away from her, she explains that he was one of the reasons she pursued a career in law—to help him gain his freedom. He brushes her off once more, making it clear that he will be the one to fix both his and their mistakes when they all meet again.
Alice, Beth, and Mel reunite with Uncle Edward
After unexpectedly meeting Lucas at the cemetery, the three friends discuss Mel’s (Sue Ramirez) connection with him despite their infamous past together.
She mentions that she and Lucas sometimes bump into each other at business expos and events and that he apparently said he has moved on from the past and is no longer vindictive with the girls. Beth (Charlie Dizon) doubts, stating that they all should move forward with their lives but in different directions.
Throughout the conversation and the car ride, Alice (Janella Salvador) notices a car parked outside her house and panics. In a rush, she runs inside and frantically calls out for her son, Seth. She hears a deep voice and at first doesn’t recognize it as belonging to Edward, her uncle, who is talking to Seth.
Shortly after, Alice, Beth, and Mel sit down together and talk about Beth’s visits and their past—when all the girls, including Erica, would often hang out at Edward’s house with his wife. They didn’t forget to ask about the state of Aunt Christina’s Alzheimer’s and what it took to convince Edward to agree to the house’s renovation and sell it to them.
As Edward gets ready to pick up Christina from a relative’s house, Alice’s ten CCTV cameras unexpectedly arrive, leaving Beth and Mel perplexed.
Erica and Marco’s tandem for justice
Erica meets once again with Marco (Race Matias), her private investigator. Since she and the girls were minors coerced by the police at the time, she assures him that she won’t face any legal repercussions if old evidence resurfaces to damage her reputation.
Erica vows to make the truth public to prove Edong’s innocence and expose the real murderer once the evidence is found. Yet as she recalls Edong’s refusal to understand her reasoning, regret seeps in. She admits she should’ve visited him back then—that she shouldn’t have let fear and cowardice hold her back.
She believes that Edong hasn’t truly moved on despite his confident claims, especially if she hasn’t moved on yet.
Mel and Anton’s controversy continues
One of Mel’s endorsements, Pure Glow, contacts her through her PR team, urging her to address the controversy during the same period as the renowned Grace & Glam fashion show. With a mysterious expression, she notices Lucas’s gym and seems to reach out to him, despite the urgency of the situation.
When she arrives home, Anton greets her with a flower in hand, as if no abuse had taken place. He assures her that he will still forgive her despite the physical violence. Irritated, Mel blames Anton for sparking the controversy.
Mel throws the flowers, an aggressive act witnessed by her PR team and an unnamed woman, her crucial identity to be revealed in the next episode.
What’s next for Erica and Lucas?
Before she can leave for home, Erica is led by her staff to meet a new client—who turns out to be Lucas—who seems to have more to say than a “long time no see.”
