In contrast to the previous episodes, which began with intense and heartbreaking introductions, episode 3 of “What Lies Beneath” begins with a nostalgic dance, even for the viewers.
Young Beth (Allyson McBride) leads her friends in the “Sabay Sabay Tayo” dance. The song, also featured in the series’ opening sequence, is rendered in a haunting whistle style to match the eeriness of the plot.
The scene of the main characters’ high spirits is cut short by another flashback to Louisa’s (Mutya Orquia) unexpected and tragic death, leading to the continuation of hauntings, panic, and tension.
Beth confides in Ryan about her doubts surrounding Mel’s controversies
Beth (Charlie Dizon) and her husband, Ryan (Yves Flores), are seen driving home, reenacting Mel (Sue Ramirez) and Anton’s (Jamesn Blake) argument. She doubts her friend’s innocence, recalling potential evidence or reasons for Mel physically abusing her husband—especially the bar and cheating scandals and Mel’s irritation with Anton’s call.
When Ryan questions why Beth wouldn’t believe her friend, Beth explains that there are many unknowns behind the circulating allegations and controversies—that they aren’t simply accusations without prior evidence.
Before Beth opens Mel’s expensive gift from one of her endorsements, the lovers experience a brief moment of silence. Astonished by the Beauty Virtue items, Beth looks at her reflection and emphasizes how Mel and Alice’s wealthy lives keep them beautiful, while Ryan reminds her that he loves her regardless of who or what she is.
Anton Montenegro is coming back
Anton calls Mel to say he’s returning and wants them to fix their relationship more than ever. Mel is frustrated and believes Anton went out on purpose to show his black eye to the public.
With a calm and kind demeanor, Anton gently explains that he is unable to cancel the surfing trip with his friends and questions why Mel always sees him as the bad guy.
Alice gets haunted by her beloved father’s death
Nightmares strike a sleeping Alice (Janella Salvador) as she recalls her father’s (Geoff Eigenmann) death in a car-truck collision. The dream transitions to her being bound by thick ropes in a dark room, followed by a worried text message from her mother asking if her husband, Scott, is aware that she has returned to the Philippines.
Alice, troubled, puts her phone and worries away for a while and embraces her son, who is sound asleep.
Erica panics over Edong’s looming presence
Erica's (Kaila Estrada) tense phone call with Edong (Jake Cuenca) ends, and she walks out of her office, shaking, afraid that Edong is just around the corner. She grabs a bottle of wine and drinks straight from it before having another flashback to Lucas (Andrez del Rosario), Edong’s younger brother and her ex-lover.
She is brought back to the memory of her and Lucas discussing Edong’s (Renshi de Guzman) innocence. Erica remembers the killer having a scar on his back, which Lucas denies Edong has. Celestino reappears in the flashback, accusing the young Erica of fabricating information about Edong in order to help his younger brother, Erica’s lover at that time.
To no avail, Edong still gets imprisoned, and a heartbroken and betrayed Lucas confronts Erica.
Celestino emerges from the room with a big, mischievous smile after the police have taken Edong away at the end of his trial. Afterwards, Louisa's brother appears, also smiling.
Erica rushes to the restroom after seeing the two different smiles of selfish pride and justice. Overwhelmed by her complicated emotions, she vomits and collapses.
Drunk and violent Celestino is taken captive
Celestino is shown leaving a pub—drunk, unsteady, with a woman calling after him, asking him to come back again. Someone accidentally bumps into him, and he becomes aggressive, pointing to his gun and threatening to shoot.
He walks away until a man wearing a jacket and a cap deliberately bumps into him. Celestino gets outraged again and starts to turn violent, but the man puts him in a chokehold and drags him into an abandoned house.
Celestino wakes up to see the man slowly approaching him with a bat— then the man strikes the policeman.
Mel, Beth, and Alice meet Lucas again
Mel, Beth, and Alice pay their respects to the late Louisa and once again sing their old craze “Sabay Sabay Tayo.” Alice takes the opportunity to tell Louisa about the promised house and how she has remained in their hearts and minds since the day she passed. As they wish Louisa peace, a strong gust of wind blows out the candles on her grave.
Mel informs the two that she will be returning to Manila to resolve the controversy involving her and her husband and to attend the Grace & Glam fashion show.
Unexpectedly, the friends run into Lucas (JM de Guzman) after many years. He shares that he will be opening the seventh branch of his business, Fitness Plus, and invites the girls to the opening celebration—even offering them memberships. Mel reluctantly agrees, given their shared history.
Later, Lucas brings flowers to his late mother’s grave but also mentions that he’s there for his brother, Edong—hinting that things are still far from over and peaceful for him.
