Netflix has announced that it will be releasing a live-action adaptation film of Gundam.

According to a press release shared by Netflix’s Tudum, the upcoming film will center on two rival pilots fighting on opposite sides of a decades-long conflict between Earth and its former space colonies.

"As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another, they’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity. With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam like it’s been seen before," the movie's description said.

The cast will be led by Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo. They will be joined by Jackson White, Shioli Kutsuna, Nonso Anozie, Michael Mando, Javon Walton, Oleksandr Rudynskyi, Ida Brooke, Gemma Chua-Tran, and Jason Isaacs.

The movie will be directed by Jim Mickle.

Filming for Gundam has commenced in Queensland, Australia.

Fans online were quick to react to the news when Netflix announced the project on Tuesday, April 21.

"Amazing actors and actresses!!! Can't wait to see what they do with this franchise!" one fan commented.

Set for release on Netflix, the film is produced by Legendary Pictures in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks. Jim Mickle will produce alongside Linda Moran under their Nightshade banner, with additional producers including Cale Boyter, Ali Mendes, and Enzo Marc.  Sydney and Noah will also come in as producers. Executive producers on the project include Matthew Jenkins, Makoto Asanuma, and Naohiro Ogata.

Gundam is a long-running Japanese science fiction franchise created by Yoshiyuki Tomino for Sunrise (now part of Bandai Namco Filmworks). It centers on giant robots known as “Mobile Suits,” with the titular Gundam typically serving as its most iconic unit.

The franchise began with the 1979 anime Mobile Suit Gundam, which helped define the “real robot” genre.

Since then, Gundam has grown into a massive multimedia property spanning dozens of TV series, films, and original video animations, as well as manga, novels, video games, and the highly popular Gunpla model kits.
