Multi-platinum artist Melanie Martinez paid tribute to ex-boyfriend Oliver Tree, who tragically died in a helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 14.

Hours after news of the fatal accident broke, Melanie took to her Instagram Story to reflect on the loss of someone who once played a significant role in her life.

“Been an absolute wreck today,” she wrote.

“It’s really hard to understand how someone who you once shared such a specific and formative time of your life with can all of a sudden be gone,” she went on.

Remembering Oliver beyond his public persona, Melanie spoke about the passion and dedication he poured into his craft, which are qualities she said she always “admired and respected so deeply”.

She went on to recall the joy Oliver naturally brought to those around him, saying his personality left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him.

“I think everyone who knew him will look back at those moments of laughter and joy he so easily sparked,” she continued.

“His laugh was so contagious and warm. His ability to lead creatively and take action while also maintaining a sense of childlike wonder and awe was so inspiring. He had such a soft heart and was a true artist in every way.”

Closing her tribute, Melanie shared a final heartfelt message to the late singer.

“Rest in peace, Oliver. I know you’re making the angels giggle. I’ll be here wondering what stunt and creative project you’re scheming up in heaven. All my love,” she concluded.

Melanie and Oliver were in a relationship from 2019 until their split in 2021. Despite parting ways, the two remained on good terms, with Melanie previously defending Oliver after some fans directed criticism toward him following their breakup, assuring supporters there was no bad blood between them.

Beyond Melanie, tributes from fellow artists, collaborators, and friends across the entertainment industry quickly poured in as many remembered Oliver not only for his music, but also for his eccentric personality and creative spirit.

British internet personality and musician KSI, who collaborated with Oliver on the track “Voices,” shared photos of them together on X, expressing disbelief at the singer’s sudden passing.

“Can’t believe I’m actually having to type this. You’re 32, man. You should still be here. You still had so much life to live. So much music to make. So much content to make. You’re a legend and will always be a legend. Still doesn’t feel real. Genuinely feel sick. I love you, bro,” he wrote.

Prior to sharing the tribute, KSI had also posted that he hoped the reports about Oliver’s death were untrue and simply another elaborate prank from the artist.

British-American stunt performer and comedian Steve-O also remembered Oliver fondly, saying he was grateful to have formed a friendship with him over the years.

“I was incredibly lucky to become friends with Oliver Tree. He would check in on me regularly, and let me know he cared about how I was doing. Such a great person, f—k, I’m going to miss him…,” he wrote on Instagram.

Singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha likewise shared her shock after learning about Oliver’s passing, recalling the experience of working together on a song intended for her 2026 album Dirty Blonde

“I’m in shock. I was in the middle of my CD signing in NYC when I found the news of Oliver Tree. I can’t believe it. We recorded a record together for Dirty Blonde. He was so smart. Passionate. Talented. Kind. I’m so sad. May he rest in peace,” she wrote.

Oliver Tree, widely recognized for hit songs such as “Life Goes On” and “Miss You,” was known for his eccentric creativity, signature bowl haircut, and unique internet persona that helped him build a massive global following.

He was 32 years old at the time of his passing.
