Golden Globe nominee Dolly de Leon shared that aspiring actors should keep learning and researching more about the characters that they play rather than striving to attain a certain stature. In an interview with veteran broadcaster Rico Hizon for his show, Beyond the Exchange, earlier this month, the award-winning actress expressed how acting is about understanding the role and having empathy in playing it.
It’s been busy time for Dolly as she has been appearing in several Hollywood shows and films in the past years after getting her much-deserved recognition in acting through the film, Triangle of Sadness.

When the veteran broadcaster asked her about the advice she could give to the aspiring actors trying to replicate her feat, the Kapamilya actress maintained that showing respect to the characters that they play will do them no wrong.
Rather than focusing on the stature, Dolly advised actors should keep on learning the material given to them.
“Don’t strive to attain the stature, just keep trying to do your best at what you do. Just stay faithful to the material and to the characters that you play and try to be as honest as you can in your interpretations of the characters you play,” she shared.
“Keep learning, keep studying, keep doing your research, and learn more about people. For me kasi acting is really about relationships. It’s about understanding the people around you. It’s about understanding human behavior and having empathy and trying to understand what it’s like to step into other people’s shoes,” she added.
While it may be nice to get fame, fortune, and the so-called stature, she shared her experience as an actor who remained focused on honing her craft over the years.
“I think all of those things are nice to have but at the end of the day, it’s all about telling a truthful story and showing respect to the characters that we play. If you keep doing that, I don’t think you can go wrong,” she said.
Dolly, however, is positive that Filipino talents will go global in the near future and expressed how exciting it is for the Philippines.
“It feels like a change is coming. More of us are gonna be out there, more of us are gonna be on the world stage and it’s an exciting time for Filipinos. There are a lot of Filipinos actually everywhere, it’s not just me–– ang dami na namin,” she shared.
