MANILA (UPDATED) — University of Santo Tomas marked a statement sweep to end its UAAP Season 88 women's volleyball first-round campaign in triumphant fashion.

The Golden Tigresses swept Far Eastern University, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20, during their Saturday afternoon matchup at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, notching their second straight win.

UST now has four wins against three losses as it prepares for the second half of the volleyball season, and helping make this possible was Angge Poyos, who scattered 16 points, nine receptions, and four digs.

"'Di biro ang FEU. Nag-iiba ang laro nila kapag UST at FEU ang magkalaban. So ni-remind namin yung players na yung mga pinaghahandaan nila, dapat lumabas sa laro," said Tigresses deputy coach Yanni Fernandez, as they notched their fourth win in their last five outings.

Also vital in the win were Reg Jurado and rookie Avril Bron, who each scored 10, while Cassie Carballo tossed 15 excellent sets.

The Tigresses also capitalized on the Lady Tamaraws' 24 errors against their 15, with a number of these coming in the last frame.

With FEU having a chance to extend the match as it held a 15-13 advantage in the third set, UST instead hacked out a 7-to-1 surge, built on five errors from the Lady Tams along with two aces from Bron.

This put the Tigresses back on top, 20-16, which eventually proved enough for them to end the match in straight sets.

On the other hand, FEU — which saw Gerz Petallo prematurely exit the match due to an apparent right shoulder injury — was led by Jazz Ellarina's 10 points. Petallo had nine before the setback, while Faida Bakanke added eight.
