MANILA (UPDATED) -- Chery Tiggo completed a weekend sweep of its assignments in the 2025 PVL on Tour at the Ynares Center in Montalban on Sunday, after a hard-earned triumph over the Akari Chargers.
The Crossovers pulled off the win in five sets, 24-26, 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 15-10, to improve to 2-0 in Pool B of the competition.
They had beaten Capital1 in four sets in their game on Saturday at the same venue.
Cess Robles starred for Chery Tiggo with 23 points on 21 kills, while rookie Renee Peñafiel -- a third round pick -- added 12 points on nine kills and two blocks. Another rookie in Baby Jyne Soreno came up with the key plays in the fifth set en route to a nine-point outing.
From a tight 6-6 count in the fifth set, Chery Tiggo reeled off three straight points -- a 1-2 play from Jasmine Nabor, an error from Eli Soyud, and a hit from the middle by Imee Hernandez. That gave them a 9-6 advantage that proved enough to fend off the Chargers.
Akari had rejected Robles at the net to stay alive, 13-10, but Soreno went down-the-line to bring Chery Tiggo to match point, then saw her serve clip the net and fall to the Akari court for the match-winning ace.
The loss dropped the Chargers to 1-3 in the competition. Ivy Lacsina led Akari with 18 points, while Soyud finished with 17 markers.
They recovered from a 2-1 set deficit and came up clutch in Set 4, surviving a last-ditch rally by Chery Tiggo to force an extension. A quick hit from Camille Victoria put Akari at set point, 24-22, and after Peñafiel saved a point, Grethcel Soltones fired a huge down-the-line hit to seal the set.
The Chargers ran out of steam in the decider, however, with an attack error by Lacsina putting Chery Tiggo in control, 13-9, before Soreno finished the job for the Crossovers.
