Coach Kungfu says passion, commitment fuel UAAP, PVL coaches amid dual responsibilities

ILOILO – Coach Kungfu Reyes of Chery Tiggo and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) women's volleyball team traveled more than 400 kilometers to attend his team's respective games on Saturday.

As the mentor of the Golden Tigresses, Reyes first helped the UAAP squad crack the win column of Season 87 women's volleyball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

And then, he traveled for six hours — via air and land transportations — to reach Passi City in time for the Crossovers' Premier Volleyball League (PVL) match at the city arena.

Citing his passion and commitment — just like his peers such as Sherwin Meneses and Dante Alinsunurin who also mentor teams in the PVL and UAAP — Reyes shared how his love for the sport fuels him and other coaches to do their duties in the two leagues.

"Ano naman 'yun, same with other coach, kami nila Sherwin [Meneses] kasi nasa collegiate na rin siya, and si coach Dante [Alinsunurin]. Siguro 'yung passion and commitment lang," he said in a chance interview at the Iloilo International Airport on Sunday.

"Kahit tanungin mo kung napapagod ba kami or ano, parang lifestyle na siya — so, used to it."

Reyes said that it's also a given that this is their livelihood, and more importantly, he's seeing the rise of the sport he loves.

"Again, passion and commitment lang din naman, siyempre ito 'yung kinabubuhay din namin and siyempre dedication din. Talagang nakakapagod sa katawang lupa mo, pero 'yung spirit mo, 'yung love of the game sa mga fans makikita mo rin," he said.

"'Yung katawang lupa lang 'yung napapagod, pero 'yung morale mo saka 'yung spirit; at na makita mo how volleyball is now."

City of Passi Arena saw a jampacked crowd, although the hometown volleyball hero, Aby Marano, and the rest of the Crossovers absorbed an 18-25, 23-25, 24-26 defeat at the hands of Alinsunurin's Choco Mucho Flying Titans.

Notably Alinsunurin also coached the NU Bulldogs in Metro Manila — less than 24 hours after he guided Choco to a PVL win in Iloilo.
