MANILA -- Rica Gerona unleashed a brilliant strike to power University of Santo Tomas to a slim 1-0 win against the University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 88 women's football tournament, Saturday at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite.
Gerona, a third-year midfielder, fired a thunderous shot from outside the box that sailed past Fighting Maroons goalkeeper Julian Arrojado in the 67th minute, giving the Lady Booters the lead.
It was the lone breakthrough of the day for both teams, who had struggled to create chances from open play.
"It was a screamer," said UST coach Marjo Allado. "The attempt was quite far. It was around 40 yards away. We didn't expect that because she plays more in the number six position, making her far away from the goal.
"But a while ago, when she had the opportunity to shoot from her range, she took it with confidence, which is how this happened," he added.
During the first half, Isalyn Tundag and Chelsea Maguad had tentative efforts for the Fighting Maroons, with one shot going over the bar and the other comfortably saved by Lady Booters goalkeeper Lizlie Garcia.
In the second half, UP won a series of free kicks, but UST managed each situation with composure. Every ball launched into the Lady Booters' box was met with timely clearances, frustrating the Fighting Maroons' attacks.
UST substitute Samantha Asilo had a late chance to seal the win with a free kick, but Garcia was equal to the task, keeping her attempt out. UP's final opportunity came through Erisa Rivas, who shot straight at Garcia as time ran out.
UST will face fellow opening-day winner De La Salle University this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Vermosa.
"It's another challenge," said Allado. "They are the finalists from last season. We drew them in the second round last year. After this game, we'll have a video review and we'll prepare for La Salle.
"Of course, the coaches and the girls want to beat La Salle if it is possible for positioning in the first round," he added.
Meanwhile, UP will aim to bounce back against defending champion Far Eastern University on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the same venue.
