The Philippine men's national under-22 team is off to a triumphant start in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games, powering past Myanmar 2-0 on Friday night at the 700th Anniversary Stadium in Chiangmai, Thailand.
Alex Monis opened the scoring in the 19th minute, lashing in a strike off a fine cross by Dylan Demunyck.
An own goal by Latt Wai Phone five minutes after the restart put the Philippines firmly in control, 2-0.
The Philippines could have killed the game off eight minutes later, but Demunyck's goal was disallowed as Otu Banatao was offside during the build-up.
Gavin Muens had his own opportunity in the 70th minute, but his powerful attempt from long range was blocked by the Burmese 'keeper, and Banatao's header off the rebound went well over the bar.
Myanmar had its chances late, but their best effort hit the post.
With the result, the Philippines took the top spot in Group C ahead of their showdown against Indonesia on Monday, December 8.
The top team in each of the three groups as well as the best second-placed team will advance to the semifinals.
