MANILA – After last suiting up for Gilas Pilipinas four years ago, Juan Gomez de Liaño returned to national team duty in the second window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
But his comeback was spoiled by back-to-back losses against New Zealand and Australia in front of an electric home crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Despite the bittersweet return, Gomez de Liaño relished the chance to don the tri-colors once again, especially at home.
"It's really an honor to represent the Philippines. Two tough games, but I feel like it's a learning experience. I think we're just going to keep moving forward and continue to work together," he told reporters after the 93-66 loss to Australia on Sunday.
"I'm still happy for the guys. We fought hard to the end, but we fell short. So, on to the next," Gomez de Liaño said.
The 26-year-old guard was one of the silver linings in the tough 69-66 defeat of Gilas to New Zealand last Thursday, tallying 10 points and two assists, including two triples.
Gomez de Liaño was even lauded by Gilas head coach Tim Cone, saying he's a 'special talent' who will be a mainstay in the national team.
However, the PBA rookie was unable to contribute offensively against Australia, finishing with four rebounds and two assists in the loss.
"I think Australia just did a good job with their scouting report. They prepared a lot too so I give credit to them," Gomez de Liaño said.
The Nationals may have gone winless in the second window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, but they still advance to the second round following New Zealand's win over Guam.

Gomez de Liaño and Gilas aim to bounce back with their 2-2 record in the third window of the Asian Qualifiers in July, where they once again face Australia and New Zealand.
