MANILA – Premier Volleyball League (PVL) commissioner Sherwin Malonzo made it clear that there was no net fault at the 14-13 count in Set 5 during the semifinal match between Akari and PLDT in the 2024 Reinforced Conference on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The High Speed Hitters were a point away from securing the match, but they ended up falling to the Chargers in the extended decider, 25-22, 18-25, 22-25, 26-24, 17-15.
Akari was awarded a point following an unsuccessful challenge by the PLDT coaching staff mid-rally.
The consequence of putting forth a challenge mid-rally was giving a point to the opponents, which happened in the contested play.
Ezra Madrigal has indeed touched the net, but it was second motion--it means that play was away from her, Malonzo emphasized.
Oly Okaro has already the ball, and she was going for her setter.
"There was no fault because na-establish na 'yung position, 'yung dalawang paa before she turned," Malonzo said.
"Wala na 'yung action of playing the ball do'n sa net when she twisted. The play was already with Oly going to the setter. Kumbaga, wala na siyang kinalaman," he also said.
Malonzo specifically cited parts of the FIVB rulebook, specifically section 11.3.2.
The rules stated that "Players may touch the post, ropes, or any other object outside the antennae, including the net itself, provided that it does not interfere with the play."
Since the net touch by Madrigal "did not interfere with the play," the PLDT challenge was unsuccessful.
PVL, after Malonzo's interview, eventually released the footage to the media. It was shown to both teams during the match, but was not broadcasted live "to avoid confusion."
