Eyewitness video released on Saturday (February 28) night showed crowds in the Iranian town of Galleh Dar toppling a monument dedicated to the Islamic Republic's founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, as flames rose from the roundabout and onlookers cheered.
The footage, verified by Reuters, captured people tearing down the monument to Iran's former Supreme Leader while cars lined up nearby and crowds watched from a distance.
The incident followed a series of strikes from the U.S. and Israel, killing Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the military campaign.
Reuters verified the location as Galleh Dar, Iran, based on the roundabout, road layout, buildings, electric poles, and trees, which matched the file and satellite imagery.
The date when the video was filmed was not verified, however no older version of the video was found online posted before February 28.
The toppled monument commemorated Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who founded the Islamic Republic of Iran.
