MANILA — Tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1 is up in 17 provinces as the low pressure area west of La Union developed into Tropical Depression Maymay.
At 10 p.m. Monday, it was was located 130 km west northwest of Bacnotan, La Union.
Wind signal no. 1 is in effect over the following areas:
- Ilocos Norte
- Ilocos Sur
- La Union
- Pangasinan
- Apayao
- Abra
- Kalinga
- Mountain Province
- Ifugao
- Benguet
- western Cagayan
- western Isabela
- northwestern Quirino
- western and central Nueva Vizcaya
- northern Nueva Ecija
- northern Tarlac
- northern Zambales
Strong winds may be experienced in these areas in the coming hours, with minor to minimal impacts expected.
As of 10 p.m., the tropical depression was located 130 kilometers west northwest of Bacnotan, La Union.
It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour with gustiness up to 70 kph and is moving east northeastward at 10 kph.
Maymay may remain stationary in the next 12 hours and intensify into a tropical storm, which will prompt the raising of wind signal no. 2.
It will move eastward and may make landfall over Ilocos Sur or La Union on Wednesday afternoon or evening, August 5.
Maymay will weaken steadily while traversing the mountainous terrain of Northern Luzon until it is downgraded into a remnant low pressure area by Thursday, August 6.
The system, along with the southwest monsoon or Habagat, will drench most of Luzon through Thursday evening:

By Friday, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique will continue to experience moderate to heavy rains from the Habagat, which will be enhanced by the approaching Typhoon Dolphin.
The risk of widespread and serious flooding and landslides is high across many parts of Luzon.
Outside the Philippine area of responsibility, Typhoon Dolphin was more than 1,900 kilometers east northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
It has slightly intensified, now with sustained winds of 165 kph and gusts up to 205 kph. It is moving west southwestward at 25 kph.
PAGASA is not ruling out the possibility of Dolphin entering the PAR but it will remain far from land. However, it will enhance the Habagat through the weekend.
It may be assigned the local name Neneng once it enters the PAR.
The public is advised to continue monitoring updates on the weather and take the necessary preparations.
