Magnitude 5.4 quake hits off Occidental Mindoro, felt in Metro Manila

A magnitude 5.4 quake struck the waters off Occidental Mindoro on Friday morning and was felt in parts of Metro Manila hundreds of kilometers away, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

MANILA — A magnitude 5.4 quake struck the waters off Occidental Mindoro on Friday morning and was felt in parts of Metro Manila hundreds of kilometers away, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. 

The quake struck about 13 kilometers southwest of Mamburao at 10:38 a.m. It had a depth of 14 kilometers.   

Phivolcs said the earthquake was felt at the following intensities.

  • “Strong” Intensity V – Mamburao; Calapan, Naujan, Puerto Galera, San Teodoro, and Victoria in Oriental Mindoro 
  • “Moderately strong” Intensity IV –  in Taal, Batangas; Abra De Ilog and Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro 
  • “Weak” Intensity III – Quezon City; Batangas City; General Trias, Cavite; San Pedro, Laguna
  • “Slightly fel” Intensity II — Parañaque; Santa Cruz, Laguna; Guinayangan, Quezon


The tremor sent people scurrying out of some buildings in Metro Manila. 


The earthquake may spawn aftershocks, Phivolcs warned.

Phivolcs initially placed the quake's magnitude at 5.8 and later downgraded it to 5.4.
