Senate honors Rene Baterbonia, Tacloban shooting victims

MANILA — The Senate on Wednesday, August 5, adopted resolutions honoring the life of Rene Baterbonia and recognizing his contributions to Philippine sports.

Sponsoring Senate Resolution No. 472, Senator Robin Padilla recounted in his sponsorship speech how Rene inspired Filipino youth through his life and dedication to basketball, using the sport to help support his family.

“Sa pamamagitan (nito), hindi lamang natin inaalala ang isang mahusay na atleta, kinikilala rin natin ang bawat kabataang Pilipino na pinipiling magsikap maging disiplinado at gamitin ang kanilang talento upang makapagbigay ng dangal sa kanilang pamilya at sa ating bayan,” Padilla said.

Rene's parents, Rovelyn and Rene Baterbonia Sr., were present during the session.Senator Risa Hontiveros, who expressed her support on the resolution, addressed Rene's parents during the proceedings.

“Alam po namin na lubos masakit ang kanyang pagkawala, ngunit naway makapagdulot ng kaunting kapayapaan sa kalooban na malaman niyo na hindi po siya makakalimutan. Na sa senadong ito binibigkas ang kanyang pangalan nang may paggalang,” she said.

Senators Joel Villanueva, Camille A. Villar, and Pia S. Cayetano also co-sponsored the resolution.

The Senate likewise approved Senate Resolution No. 473, expressing its profound sympathies to the families of Chris Lorenz Fabian, Ayessa Nicole Dazo, and Joyancee Separa, the three students killed in the Tacloban shooting, while honoring their memory.

Padilla, who also sponsored the resolution, emphasized that the measure pays tribute to the victims and underscores the need to keep schools safe.

“Sa mga resolusyong sa Senado na ating tinatalakay ngayon ay pagpupugay sa kanyang katapangan at paaalala na dapat manatiling ligtas ang mga paaralan. Sa mga pamilyang naiwan, sana ay maging kaunting ginhawa ang pagkilalang ito sa Senado,” Padilla who also sponsored the resolution said.

The resolution was likewise co-sponsored by Senators Villanueva, Villar, and Hontiveros.
