When it comes to naming a harrowing personal narrative that also powerfully conveys the grim reality that exists for many women experiencing abuse, Mel Barrera-Montenegro’s (Sue Ramirez) story in “What Lies Beneath” is worth keeping in mind.
Despite growing up deprived of genuine support from her parents, being entangled in false controversies, enduring Anton’s (Jameson Blake) manipulative tendencies, and experiencing another heartbreak from Lucas (JM de Guzman), Mel’s tumultuous journey toward her desired freedom has viewers yearning for her to live the life she deserves in peace.
Relive these five compelling scenes of Mel discovering over time that she must break free from the shackles of Anton’s relentless abuse, her father’s insatiable expectations, and society’s patriarchal ideals.
#1: Mel loses her child due to Anton’s rage
The day before she was about to elope with Lucas (JM de Guzman) and completely relieve herself from Anton’s cruelty, Mel shockingly discovered her pregnancy and immediately decided to end her secret affair with Lucas, not wanting to raise her child in a broken family.
Other than yearning to build a perfectly loving household, Mel actually had sincere hopes that Anton would change once she gave birth to their child. This sadly proved to be a pipe dream, as Anton resorted to assaulting Mel when she had suggested helping him win back his cancelled show—a detrimental sign of Anton’s excessive insecurity.
Blinded with rage, Anton roughly pushed Mel down the stairs, who then unexpectedly suffered a traumatic miscarriage from the fall.
Mel then tearfully revealed this haunting memory of her miscarriage to Erica (Kaila Estrada), Alice (Janella Salvador), and Beth (Charlie Dizon), stressing that she deserved all the pain and unhappiness inflicted by Anton since she couldn’t save her unborn child.
#2: Mel rises up against her controlling father
It wasn’t only Anton that prevented Mel from attaining her dreams, but also her repressive father, Cedric (Franco Laurel). From a young age, Mel had always been forced to comply with her father’s rules, which she bravely overcame on her own upon her decision to pursue being a fashion stylist instead of being a doctor, which her father wanted.
A few hours after the press conference where Mel finally disclosed to the public about the reality of her abusive marriage with Anton, Cedric arrived alongside Mel’s mother, Margie (Karen Timbol).
Instead of providing support, Cedric criticized Mel, ordering her to dismiss the charges against Anton and mostly emphasizing his need to maintain their family’s respected reputation—which he also says Mel would tarnish repeatedly.
Disappointed once more by her father, Mel confronts him about his wrongdoings and recalls how she had always strived for the kind of perfection that he would approve of—which led her to marry the seemingly perfect husband, Anton.
Regardless of how much Mel’s autonomy and identity are lost, Cedric remains unsatisfied. This time, however, Mel strongly expressed how she doesn’t need him as a father. Appalled, Cedric slaps Mel, and in the process of Mel standing up for herself, she also frees her mother from him.
#3: Mel tells more of the truth to Tim and Tom
After years of choosing silence, Mel started to face Anton’s wrath courageously, even returning to the mansion they both shared in their marriage to retrieve her treasured belongings.
At first, she was stopped by one of the house helpers, still fearful of Anton’s dominance despite his absence at the place. Mel spoke further of the multiple instances wherein Anton had abused her, especially right before her eagerly anticipated fashion showcase, when Anton punched her shortly before she appeared on stage.
She acknowledged that she could have reached out for help at the time but was more intent on keeping the illusion that she was in control, only to realize later that it was better for her to reclaim her life rather than hiding beneath perfection.
Upon hearing Mel’s story, Tim (Dingdong Bahan) and Tom (Patrick Ramirez) apologized for not believing and siding with Mel sooner, and the three warmly embraced.
#4: Mel is tormented further by Anton’s deepfake scheme
Just as Mel was finally taking charge of her own life, Anton viciously struck back, orchestrating a deepfake video scandal that remorselessly used Mel’s identity. Tim, Tom, Margie, and Mel had seen it altogether, with Mel panicking over the malicious reactions of the public.
Even as she safely arrived at Alice’s place, Mel broke down in heavy tears, with her mother’s loving embrace being her only solace.
#5: Mel unveils the disturbing footage of Anton’s abuse
At first, Mel was extremely hesitant of publicizing the videos of Anton’s abuse, as it would truly feel as if she were reliving the awful times again. However, with the intense hatred from Anton’s supporters continuing unabated, she made the choice to lay everything out for the people to see, even if there will be beliefs against her that would remain unchanged.
Mel declared further how tired she is of being frightened, and by bravely exposing the footage, she allowed herself to be free.
Keep track of Mel’s healing in “What Lies Beneath,” airing weeknights on Kapamilya Channel sa ALLTV2, A2Z, Kapamilya Online Live (KOL), and iWant.
