Love shouldn’t look like this. In the Kapamilya mystery thriller drama "What Lies Beneath," Anton Montenegro's character, hauntingly portrayed by Jameson Blake, isn’t your typical villain.
He shows love, yes, but his brand of affection comes dressed in pretty words, grand gestures, and just the right amount of guilt to keep you guessing until you no longer recognize yourself. Psychology calls this coercive control, or a pattern of manipulation that slowly chips away at one’s autonomy under the guise of love.
Here are the telltale signs of a manipulative partner, as seen through Anton’s chilling behavior in "What Lies Beneath."
Sign #1: Love as Control
He tells you where to go and even who to befriend, basically how you should live your life, but frames it as “just looking out for you.” It’s love, but only on his terms. Because for someone like Anton, love is an ownership.
Case in point: that one time he stormed into his wife Mel (Sue Ramirez)'s hospital room where she was still under observation after suffering internal injuries from his own violent outburst. But he decided she was going home. He said he's already signed a waiver for her discharge. He made that decision for her. And then he tightened his grip by deciding she was 'too sick' to work just so he could keep her to himself.
Sign #2: Gaslighting
He makes you question your memory and your reality. When things go wrong, it’s your fault. When you cry, you're too emotional.
Gaslighting is Anton’s language. We heard him speak it when he said, “Why do you keep doing this, Mel?" while acting innocent as he confronted his wife for coming home late and getting drunk, then brought up the time she was previously involved in a “scandal” for doing the same thing. Back then, people assumed she had hurt him in public, when in truth, she was simply resisting his control.
Mel answered that it was Anton’s actions that caused the scandal in the first place, to which he replied, putting on a gentle facade, “I don’t remember it that way. Bakit palagi mo na lang iniiba ang kuwento, Mel? Ilang beses ko bang sasabihin sa'yo, you're crazy and you need help."
When Mel defended herself, he called her hysterical before lacing his words with a warning, "Gusto mo bang masaktan ka ulit? Ayokong sinasaktan ka but you never give me a choice."
Sign #3: Dependency Trap
He makes you feel like he’s the only one who truly understands you. Slowly, your world shrinks until it revolves around him, like a trap disguised as intimacy. You need him. Or so he wants you to believe.
If your lover’s words sound like, “Walang ibang magmamahal sa’yo na tulad ko," it’s a warning wrapped in affection. That’s exactly what Anton told Mel when she voiced her desire to escape their hellish marriage. And just when she tried to reclaim her freedom, he threatened to destroy her career if she dared to leave him.
Sign #4: Public Mask
To the world, he's charming, successful, the guy who brings flowers and says the right things. But behind closed doors, the version of him you get is far from sweet. Don’t be fooled by curated perfection.
Sign #5: Love Turns Violent
When love crosses the line from passionate to painful, it’s no longer love. More often than not, manipulators gain control by slowly breaking down boundaries until there’s nothing left to protect. Just like how Anton thinks he has the right to hurt Mel whenever, wherever, and however he wants.
Each time Mel tries to pull away, Anton finds new ways to keep her within reach. But as the truth of their relationship slowly unravels, so does the illusion of love he’s carefully built, revealing the manipulator behind the mask.
