“What Lies Beneath” begins with the heart-rending death of Louisa Mae Soria, portrayed by the ever-talented Mutya Orquia. As the story unfolds, we witness the many facets of Louisa’s identity: a close friend to young Mel (Reich Alim), Alice (Eliza Borromeo), Beth (Allyson McBride), and Erica (Krystal Mejes); a misunderstood and socially criticized girl in Amurao; and a devoted lover to Liezel (Kolette Madelo).
With all of her genuine connections, Louisa clearly stands as a central figure whose presence gives the show its emotional depth and resonance. Mutya Orquia expands on this, highlighting Louisa’s selflessness and bravery as the qualities she loves the most about her character.
In detail, Louisa is always willing to fight for the people she loves—saving Alice from a car accident, cautioning Erica against choices that could endanger her, supporting Mel to express herself beyond her parents’ strict rules, and choosing to love Liezel despite opposition from Pastor Samuel and the entire town of Amurao.
However, this selflessness also has a downside—like a double-edged sword. Mutya further explains this trait of Louisa which she dislikes: when it comes to her own happiness, Louisa often sets aside her real emotions.
One moment that shows this was when Liezel asked about how Louisa feels that they can’t ever freely love one another with people seeing them. Worrying more about the judgments that would ensnare and hurt Liezel, she says that what only matters is Liezel’s love for her.
