Mel Barrera-Montenegro (Sue Ramirez), a prominent celebrity stylist among the MABEL girls, is no stranger to the benefits and pitfalls of the limelight. Behind the scenes and beneath the controversies in which she has been embroiled—often cast as the villain—she is simply a person seeking genuine love and the fulfillment of her dreams.
False controversies constantly frame Mel
“You can never really trust a pretty face,” this is the gist of the opinions incessantly directed at Mel whenever another controversy emerges. Up to now, the most talked-about in the series involves rumors that she is an abusive wife to her so-called “green flag” husband, Anton Montenegro (Jameson Blake).
The series did a clever job of leading audiences to believe the speculation, but as soon as the sixth episode dropped, even the gentlest and most pitiful expressions from Anton felt deceptive—an impression that finally shattered when Mel became certain about divorcing him.
All the truth spilled to the viewers: Anton’s bruise was caused by Mel, but she was only defending herself from another assault fueled by his petty jealousy. Other stories portraying Mel as the villain were created by Anton himself, who even went so far as to claim that she was using drugs and cheating with a co-worker he envied.
Mel was weighed down by others’ judgments
At a young age, Mel was already pressured by her parents, particularly her father, to inherit the family business as a doctor. When she chose to follow her dream of becoming a fashion stylist, she was exiled—“Doctor or nothing,” her father had once said.
Even in her choice of friends—especially MABEL (Alice, Beth, Erica, and Louisa)—during Louisa’s (Mutya Orquia) death and young Edong’s (Renshi de Guzman) trial, her father labelled her a disappointment, as the case began to bring shame to the Barrera family.
Showing how Louisa’s murder case affected her sense of self, the people of Amurao and the local police were relentless in pressuring her—just as they had pressured Alice, Beth, and Erica—to testify against Edong, with her father being the one to seal it all, urging her to follow the police’s version of events so the fiasco would finally end.
Fourteen years later, not one fully believed in Mel’s capabilities alone, with even Beth (Charlie Dizon) and Alice (Janella Salvador) mentioning that her marriage to Anton had helped her succeed—a notion she had to counter by reminding them that she was already known before him.
Her closest co-workers, Tim (Dingdong Bahan) and Tom (Patrick Ramirez), at times would second-guess Mel, especially when they discreetly discussed Anton as an ideal guy with nothing to hide, while casting Mel as the problematic one.
Lastly, one might think she could have had a second mother to rely on (a support she had lacked from her own in the past), but her mother-in-law was also critical of her relationship with Anton, often bringing up the “utang na loob” card.
Mel’s success hides Anton’s control
Like a puppet on strings, Mel always had to perform for the cameras, and every time she did, a part of her gave way to Anton’s power. For instance, if she decided to end their marriage, she would inevitably lose partnerships with her clients—most notably her dream project with Grace & Glam.
Her standout moments on the runway were also not a hindrance for Anton to rule her, as after a harmless joke about Mel not needing a man to shine, the shamed and simmering Anton gives her a punch to the gut before she would endure the pain (that would also soon get her to a hospital) on stage.
Anton’s persistent abuses stretched from the pandemic, when he had Mel all to himself, to having guards who refused to help her, hiding her phone and ATM cards, and his final chess piece: intimate videos of Mel that he is currently using to blackmail her into returning home during her temporary stay at Alice’s.
Mel falls for Lucas’ false love
Flashbacks from her youth revealed that she had an attraction to the young Lucas (Andrez del Rosario), who eventually became young Erica’s (Krystal Mejes) lover at the time.
Fourteen years after Edong’s imprisonment, brought about by Mel and the rest of MABEL’s testimonies, she reunites with Lucas at a party, only to be initially turned down when trying to rekindle their connection.
But when Lucas witnessed Anton’s abuse toward Mel—which reminded him of his own father’s domestic violence—he provided a deep sense of comfort that no one else has ever given her.
Soon after, Lucas revealed that forming any connection with her is the last thing he wanted. He deliberately made it seem as though he already moved on from their past, all to extract the truth about Edong’s imprisonment from Mel.
Mel begins to feel that life can be hers
Beyond dealing with Anton, Mel wrestles with her own mind, torn between staying or finally leaving.
In the recent episodes, she begins to acknowledge Jo, her former househelper and a fellow survivor of domestic abuse.
With Jo’s help, Mel has considered reaching out to Sinta, an organization for women’s rights, and has inquired about annulment.
