Right at the very moment that he made his first appearance on “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,” avid viewers had likely figured out already that P/Lt Hector Victorino (Aljur Abrenica) would get on our nerves due to the arrogance that he had displayed.
Little did we know that it was just the tip of the iceberg because as time went by, we’ve learned that there are actually more things to hate about him, especially when it comes to being the guy in a “romantic relationship.” And we get to witness that through his one-sided love affair with his subordinate Patrolwoman Paula “Ponggay” Garcia (Maris Racal), with whom he has badly fallen head over heels at first sight.
Unfortunately for him, the feeling is not mutual for Ponggay, who apparently doesn’t harbor any tinge of romantic feelings for him because, aside from wanting to focus first on her career as a budding police officer, Hector is basically not her type, especially because he’s such a walking red flag.
In fact, Ponggay has been so annoyed at him, and the only reason why she keeps on communicating with him and entertaining him is because of work, nothing more and nothing less. But being the pompous person that he has always been, Hector has either intentionally ignored or probably missed the signs of Ponggay being completely irritated at him.
And in this Kapamilya Update, prepare to get completely annoyed as we revisit the scenes in “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo” that show the vexing red flag moments of Hector.
First off is the way he wants to rush things between him and Ponggay and being assertive about his feelings towards her. As she suggested during their date for them to get to know each other first, he told her that there was no need for them to do it anymore since he’s certain that she would give him her sweet “yes” to become his girlfriend.
Even though they weren’t an item yet, he had already shown tendencies of being possessive towards her by insisting that they become exclusive with each other, to which Ponggay had no choice but to give in because of the cringe-worthy stuff that he would do to prove his love for her.
Second was when Hector requested Ponggay for a kiss as soon as they arrived at her abode in exchange for paying for their dinner date. She repeatedly refused his advances to her, especially when he started forcing himself on her, which Ponggay’s Lola Florie (Perla Bautista) was able to catch. As he introduced himself as a suitor of her granddaughter, the snarky old woman uttered, “Manliligaw pero kung umasta ka parang kayo na eh.”
The reddest flag of Hector could be when he deliberately shouted at Ponggay and berated her in front of their colleagues for what she had done during their latest mission together, which led to the escape of Tanggol (Coco Martin) and his group. He went on to tag her as a big disgrace to the police force for her refusal to follow his commands and her incompetence to fulfill her duty.
Making things even worse was when he pinned the blame of their failed mission on her after being heavily reprimanded by Quiapo Police’s newest station commander, P/Cpt. Rigor Dimaguiba (John Estrada) as soon as they returned. He related how Ponggay’s blunder botched their mission and plans and went on to insist to Rigor that it must be her who should be held liable.
What Hector had done is undoubtedly a major turn-off because, apart from intentionally hurting the feelings of the woman he claims to love, it’s also unbecoming for a leader like him to incriminate anyone from his team.
And lastly, in spite of what he had done to her, Hector still mustered the gall to casually talk to her as if nothing had happened. Ponggay tried her best to remain respectful at him when he approached her one morning at the police station to tell her how sorry he was and that he didn’t intend to hurt her—which came off as insincere. In order to cut their conversation off, she simply told him that she was okay and went on to excuse herself from him as he asked her why she had avoided him. The audacity, right?
