From channeling the Sam Smith in him during the Week 2 of “Your Face Sounds Familiar,” wherein he astounded us with his very on-point impersonation as he performed “Dancing With A Stranger,” Jason Dy went on to give us a remarkable presentation as he transformed into music legend Frank Sinatra and performed one of his classic hits, “New York, New York.”
During his mentoring session with the show’s resident vocal mentor Klarisse de Guzman, the Prince of Soul conveyed how excited he was upon learning that he would become the prominent American singer-actor this week. Even though he’s more of a pop and R&B singer, the challenge of singing a song that’s not his genre actually exhilarated him.
Contrary to his previous performance in which he had to do falsettos and vibratos, Jason had to put those to rest as he had to unleash the “very deep, crooner voice” that Frank was known for. Besides, from doing a lot of bold movements onstage that exposed the natural dancer in him, their movement mentor, Nyoy Volante, advised him that since Frank is “the crooner of all crooners,” he had to exude “company CEO energy,” which meant only doing minimal yet assertive movements.
And Jason apparently took note of everything they’d told him, as he indeed amazed everyone, especially the jury, with his transformation into “Mr. Ol’ Blue Eyes” performing “New York, New York”—bringing Week 3 off to a good start as the first performer.
Following his performance, hosts Jhong Hilario and Vhong Navarro challenged him to “Jasonify,” or do his version of the aforementioned song, as well as judge Ogie Alcasid and mentors Nyoy and Klarisse, who all obliged and provided us with their respective quirky versions.
The jury all praised him, with Ogie and Sharon Cuneta giving Jason a “kudos” for the impressive job he did in spite of the differences in their vocal quality and genre. The Megastar went on to wholeheartedly thank him for taking his performances seriously and telling him that he had gained a new fan in her, as she promised to look forward to his performances beyond the show and making his songs part of her playlist. Nyoy and Klarisse echoed their comments by also commending him for another job well done.
