Two P-pop groups are set to become the Philippines' new tourism ambassadors, Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said Monday, though she did not disclose which acts had been selected.
At the sidelines of the Wanderlust Week press conference, Angara-Mathay said they would make the formal announcement either Thursday or Friday.
“Sinabi ko na paninindigan ko na ito, kahit mahal pa o mura,” she said.
She said music was very important, which is why they are tapping Filipino artists to showcase the best of the Philippines.
“We want to combine music and images together so that we form a feeling that stays. That’s what we’re after,” she added.
When asked for a clue as to who the groups would be, the tourism chief said it would just be a surprise, but added that she realized how relevant and big P-pop groups were when they recently congratulated one group on social media.
“Tama naman yun if they’re proud to be Filipinos, they’re proud of showcasing… We have to congratulate [them]. And then I found out that particular post generated the most likes. Sabi ko effective,” she said.
Based on the recent social media posts of the Department of Tourism, the agency congratulated BINI and Sophia Laforteza of the multinational girl group KATSEYE for their performances at Coachella in the US. Angara-Mathay also recently said they want to tap BINI as possible tourism ambassadors.
