After releasing a few bops in the past, the R&B/hip-hop star returns with the release of “1A,” a track that enabled her to open up about her failures, self-doubt, and insecurities in life. The hazy, laid-back jam will be part of her upcoming new EP Depresyon which is scheduled to drop within the year.
“'1A' really came from a genuine and vulnerable place in my life,” shares the multi-hyphenate artist. “When I recorded it, I remember thinking that maybe it was too personal to release. I kept questioning if people would understand it, or if the timing was even right. But at the same time, I realized there are probably so many people silently carrying the same emotions every day — feelings of failure, pressure, self-doubt, or feeling lost despite trying their best.”
As someone who is constantly dealing the pressure and expectations of celebrity culture under the prying eyes of the public, Jemay wrote “1A” as a way to reach out to people like her, silently suffering from anxiety and emotional distress.
“With ‘1A,’ I wanted to talk about experiences and emotions that many people go through behind closed doors, especially the feeling of being lost or misunderstood despite how things may look on the outside,” the crossover solo act explains. “Mental health and self-awareness are topics that deserve more genuine conversations, and if my music can help people feel seen, understood, or less alone even in a small way, then that means a lot to me. At the end of the day, this release is more than just a song; it’s a reflection of reality, vulnerability, and the importance of putting yourself first before anything else.”
Far from being a product of trends, “1A” openly addresses the emotional realities hidden behind the smiles, confidence, and success often projected online.
