MANILA -- Marking her 40th year in the music industry, “Asia’s Songbird” Regine Velasquez-Alcasid has been named Woman of the Year by Billboard Philippines.

The announcement was made Monday, March 23.

In her digital cover feature, Velasquez reflects on four decades in music, her enduring passion for her craft, and how her views on growth and legacy have evolved over time.

On Instagram, her husband Ogie Alcasid congratulated his wife for the tribute given to her by the music magazine for her creative work as a singer.

"Congratulations mahal. A well deserved tribute to your devotion and passion for your art. All glory to God. We love you and We are so proud of you," Alcasid wrote.

Velasquez rose to fame in the mid-‘80s when she won in singing competitions both here (“Ang Bagong Kampeon”) and on the world stage (Asia Pacific Song Contest), hence the moniker.

Known for her repertoire of soaring ballads, and her wide vocal range and technique, Velasquez is considered a music icon, with over a dozen platinum-selling albums and awards to her name.

As a singing champion at age 14, Velasquez has also helped rear the careers of the likes of Sarah Geronimo and Rachelle Ann Go, both celebrated performers who earned their start in showbiz via singing contests hosted by their “idol.”

Apart from singing, Velasquez is also known for her acting and hosting projects, including ABS-CBN's "ASAP."
