MANILA — Wolfgang drummer Wolf Gemora looked back on the band’s early years as the group’s 1995 debut album marked its 30th anniversary, recalling the energy of the 1990s and the creative momentum that shaped one of Filipino rock’s defining records.
In a Facebook post shared on the band’s official page, Gemora described the era as “exciting times,” saying he could still picture the music scene that surrounded the band’s formation. He recalled being in his 20s as the internet arrived in the Philippines, text messaging became widespread and a new wave of rock dominated the airwaves.
Gemora said he first conceived of forming a band in 1991 while working as a roadie for Razorback. By mid-1992, the lineup — then briefly known as The Flaming Hemorrhoids — was complete. The group secured a regular Friday slot at Weekends Live! in Makati the following year, a residency that helped define Wolfgang’s early style and build its reputation in the local rock circuit.
As interest in the underground scene grew, Gemora said Ivory Records offered the band a chance to record in 1994 amid a wave of labels signing emerging acts. He described the sessions as “fun and exciting,” even as the members were still unfamiliar with the realities of working with a major label. Those recordings would become the band’s self-titled debut, released the following year.
Gemora recounted one moment during production when the label asked whether the band could add more songs resembling the ballad “Darkness Fell.” The suggestion was dismissed, he said, with the band choosing instead to place the track at the end of the album “to make sure that the listener would experience all the other songs before reaching the ballad.”
He said the record has endured because of the band’s wide-ranging influences and commitment to creating work that would “stand the test of time.” Gemora credited acts from Metallica and Pink Floyd to Stevie Wonder and Juan Dela Cruz as shaping their approach to music.
“Thirty years later, the music and lyrics still hold true,” he wrote, adding that he remains grateful for the support the band has received over the decades. He closed his post by remembering bassist Mon Legaspi, who died in 2022. “I hope that Mon is smiling down on all of this,” he said.
The band’s debut album is widely regarded as a landmark release in Filipino rock and continues to find new listeners three decades after its release.
Reunion show
Wolfgang is marking the anniversary with a one-night reunion show in 2026.
Vocalist Basti Artadi, guitarist Manuel Legarda and Gemora will return as a trio for a performance on February 7, produced by Ovation Productions, although the venue has not yet been announced.
The 2026 show will be the first time Artadi, Gemora, and Legarda have shared a stage as Wolfgang since Artadi pursued a solo career in the late 2010s.
In a Rolling Stone Philippines interview, Artadi recalled his early days in the Manila rock scene and the camaraderie between Wolfgang and Razorback, saying, “Even to this day, I love heavy metal. I love it for the theatrics, I love it for the bombast.”
While the full set list has not been revealed, the trio’s involvement hints at a show built around the material that shaped their early years. For fans of the band — whose influence runs through generations of Filipino rock acts — the reunion offers a rare opportunity to hear the chemistry that defined an era.
