P-pop boy group Yes My Love brought ‘kilig vibes’ in their rendition of “Don Romantiko,” originally popularized by actor, dancer, and It’s Showtime host Vhong Navarro.
In an exclusive interview with PUSH ABS-CBN, the group expressed how honored and grateful they are to have been entrusted by Star Music with a fresh and modern take on the nostalgic track.
“It’s such an honor for us kasi isa iyon sa mga kinakanta namin noong bata kami and sinasayawan pa, tapos ngayon kinakanta na namin ‘yung ‘Don Romantiko’,” member Niko said.
He added: “It feels so great — Lord thank you so much and Star Music. Sabi nga ni Kuya Jeff na bagong babies kami ng Star Music, so we are grateful na ipinagkatiwala sa amin ang song na ito.”
For the group, recording the song was not only a career milestone but also a way to pay tribute to the original artist. Member Joshua emphasized how important it was for them to honor the legacy of Vhong Navarro while still infusing their own artistry into the track.
“Para sa amin, it’s important din to pay respects pa rin sa original singer kasi sila po ‘yung nag-pave ng way to have all of these beautiful music for us,” he said. “I feel like it’s intention. And firm believer kami ng intentions. We feel like our intent is to uphold whatever Sir Vhong has already pushed out there. Ang daming good vibes na nabigay ng kanta, so kami we want to take a more romantic route sa kanta.”
Their version of “Don Romantiko” also showcases the group’s distinct musical personalities, particularly in the arrangement. RZ shared that he aimed to incorporate a smooth R&B flavor through his guitar work.
The track also became a special collaboration with The Voice Philippines alum and singer-producer Jeremy Glinoga, who worked closely with the group to achieve their signature sound.
“Nagcollaborate din kami kay Jeremy G. Siya ‘yung producer ng song kaya sobrang salamat po and sobrang galing ng areglo na nagawa niya for us. Sobrang smooth sailing,” member Jeff said. The members also revealed that they are excited to hear Vhong Navarro’s reaction to their rendition, expressing admiration for the original version that inspired their reimagining.
As they celebrate this new release, Yes My Love is already looking ahead to their next musical venture, especially now that they are officially part of the Star Music family.
“Hopefully, Christmas songs,” Joshua expressed. “Kami talaga, mga Christmas people. Kaming lima, we love to spend Christmas with our family. Sana mabigyan ng chance to be able to show and do Christmas songs.”
