MANILA -- After being showcased in international festivals in Cannes, Italy, Locarno, Switzerland and Austin, Texas, the hardcore action film "Topakk" is now coming home.
Directed by Richard Somes, the movie will premiere at the 50th edition of the Metro Manila Film Festival later this month.
However, the film's producers had to voluntarily cut some of the more hardcore action sequences from "Topakk," so that they would get a favorable classification and rating from the MTRCB.
"Dalawa ang ratings ng Topakk. Isang R-16 at isang R-18. R-16 para makapasok kami sa SM (cinemas). Tapos R-18 doon sa mga hindi SM (cinemas)," explained Nathan Studios producer, Sylvia Sanchez.
The R-16 version has less gore compared to the R-18 cut. However, Somes said local audiences will not see the full director's cut that was shown in international festivals.
In "Topakk," Arjo Atayde plays a former soldier who experienced a traumatic ordeal while on a mission. After his discharge, his character goes on to work as a security guard in an abandoned warehouse.
A series of events then follows that triggers his trauma.
The movie tackles how people deal with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the producers and cast hope that "Topakk" can raise more awareness among Filipinos about the issue.
The film also stars Enchong Dee, Sid Lucero and Julia Montes.
"Topakk" will hit cinemas on December 25, as part of the 50th MMFF.
